BCCI to sanction a month long window for Women’s IPL

Women’s IPL is all set to be a massive affair in the Indian cricketing circle. The league is to be sanctioned for a month-long window in March 2023, which is terrific news for Women cricketers and their followers. The much-awaited tournament is finally turning into reality. After much delay and logistical issues, the League will be given a month-long window, as reported by news agency PTI on 12th August. BCCI sources were cited in the news article, where it was mentioned that the tour will be given a four-week window.

Women’s IPL was played under the banner of the Women’s T20 challenge this year. It consisted of just four games between 3 teams. But in 2023, the game will be given full-fledged recognition and an identity of its own.

“Yes, the WIPL will start in the first week of March and we have earmarked a four-week window for the first year. The T20 World Cup in South Africa is from February 9 to 26 and immediately after that, we plan to hold the WIPL,” as reported by a senior BCCI official privy to the development.

He further added, “As of now, we are going ahead with five teams but it could be six as there is a lot of interest among potential investors. In due course of time, the process of auctioning of teams will be announced.”

BCCI president Mr. Sourav Ganguly and secretary Mr. Jay Shah have shown their support and excitement for the game. Mr. Shah mentioned in an interview, stating, “I am thrilled at the kind of response we have got from the stakeholders. Multiple existing IPL teams have enquired and expressed serious interest in owning WIPL franchises.”
