WPL 2024: “Happy That We Qualified” – Harmanpreet Kaur Says Following Her Match-winning 95*

Harmanpreet Kaur played an unbelievable knock versus the Gujarat Giants in Match 16 of the Women’s Premier League 2024 (WPL 2024). Scoring an unbeaten 95 off just 48 deliveries, the right-handed batter unleashed her fury driving MI to a famous win.

Owing to her performance, Mumbai Indians became the first team to qualify for the playoffs and speaking on the occasion to her former teammate and current MI coach, Jhulan Goswami- Harmanpreet Kaur said, “It feels great, today was an important match. It was playing in my mind that if we win today and qualify, it will be better. (I’m) happy that we qualified.”

Reflecting on her blitzkrieg knock that changed the fortunes of MI who required 91 runs off the last six overs, the skipper of MI said, “For me, the first and foremost thing was to rotate the strike because I wanted to get used to the pitch and the conditions and see how the ball was travelling. When Amelia Kerr came, we were just counting the number of sixes required and at that stage, we needed 9 sixes off 24 balls (the last four overs). So we thought even if we miss one ball, we can always go for it (in the next ball). So, we were calculating it like that.”

WPL 2024: Harmanpreet Kaur-led Mumbai Indians qualified for the playoffs

For Harmanpreet Kaur, this was a knock to remember and one of her finest and when quizzed if she was waiting for a knock like this, she shared, “There was no wait per se but every day there is a mindset that if I give a good start to the team and play well, it would be ideal. Sometimes things don’t go your way but today things were falling perfectly according to plan”.

Assessing the wicket at the Arun Jaitley Stadium that has largely favoured the team batting first on winning the toss- she shared, “First innings when they (Gujarat Giants) were batting, the wicket was looking easy even though our bowlers were bowling well- easy boundaries were being scored. From there, I understood the pitch is easy (and conducive) for batting and much better than the other wickets (that have proven to be challenging).”

“We obviously could not keep in mind that the way the team batting first will always win so in between the last 7th or the 8th over, when we were bowling well and they got to 150, it gave me the impression that they would go for a score in excess of 200 but Saika’s over was very important and Pooja’s wicket of (Ashleigh) Gardner and other wickets in between was crucial to our prospects. Because then restricting them to a score under 200 felt that even we can chase this down and make a match out of it,” Harmanpreet kaur concluded.

Jhulan Goswami, the beaming interviewer concluded that Mumbai Indians going ahead would also require such scintillating knocks from the captain that would augur well for them and Harmanpreet Kaur smilingly nodded and agreed.
