WPL 2024: In Another Dramatic Chase, RCB Fell 1 Run Short Against Delhi Capitals Despite Richa Ghosh’s Heroics

Shreyanka Patil and Richa Ghosh brimmed with emotion when Royal Challengers Bangalore lost to the Delhi Capitals by one run in Match No.17 of the Women’s Premier League 2024 (WPL 2024) on Sunday, March 10 at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi. With two runs needed from the penultimate ball, Jess Jonassen bowled one outside the off-stump, and Richa sliced it to backward point for a clean single.

However, Shafali Verma delivered a flawless throw at the bowler’s end, and Jess Jonassen dislodged the bails at the non-striker’s end. Delhi Capitals walked down to bat first as Meg Lanning and Shafali Verma kicked the inning off on a balanced. But silent note with just three runs and the first boundary coming in on the first ball of the second over from the bat of Verma and a second in the third over which was taken further like a storm as Lanning came up with four back-to-back boundaries in the fourth over of the WPL 2024 match.

Verma summed the powerplay up with her and her team’s first six followed by a boundary to put the scoreboard at 53 but Verma laid her wicket off in the seventh over as Asha Sobhana got the breakthrough at her 23. And this was attacked on a further note by Shreyanka Patil as Lanning too met her departure in the eighth over at 29 off 26 balls.

Alice Capsey and Jemimah Rodrigues kept the runs rolling down the inning as they both managed to score a couple of boundaries each along with timely singles to put the tenth over at 84 for the loss of 2. Rodrigues was banging back with three consecutive boundaries in the 13th over and two more in the following over that was in salutation with a six during the WPL 2024 match.

Just as Capsey started hitting in the 16th over with a boundary followed by two more in the 17th over, the 18th over saw Rodrigues collapsing before Shreyanka Patil as she gave another breakthrough when Rodrigues was at 58 off just 36 balls.

And as Capsey tried to shrug some pressure off the shoulders with her attack to collect two back-to-back boundaries, Marizanne Kapp chipped in to gift her first maximum to herself in the 19th over but that was met with Capsey’s dismissal in the last over along with the one of Jess Jonassen to freeze the scoreboard at 181 for the loss of 5.

The chase started well with Smriti Mandhana getting off the mark with a single followed by Sophie Molineux’s boundary in style in the very first over but that was very uncertain and unfortunate for RCB to lay Mandhana off only in the second over after she hit her only boundary but Ellyse Perry joined in to smash a boundary in the fourth over followed by the first maximum of the chase from her bat in the fifth over along with a couple of boundaries in the last over of the powerplay.

Molineux too joined hands with Perry in the eighth over with a boundary that was contemplated well by Perry with a couple of boundaries followed by two more from the bat of Molineux in the tenth over to put the scoreboard at 81 for the loss of 1 before Perry finally getting dismissed in the following over in a disappointing run-out just a run ahead of her fifty. And there was Molineux too departing in the next over of the WPL 2024 match.

After a silent 13th over, Richa Ghosh and Sophie Devine opened the face of their bats with a four from Richa and two sixes from Devine along with a four in the 15th over. Ghosh tried to ease things up with Devine as she was swaying her bat in every next over to collect boundaries as it happened in the 16th over with a four and a maximum from her bat. The 17th over just saw five singles to rotate the strike, but Devine gave her ways and wickets in the 18th over at 26.

Georgia Wareham joined the chase to hit just two boundaries, one each in the 18th and 19th over before getting dismissed by Shikha Pandey. The last over again saw a dramatic end to the match as Ghosh started the first ball with a six which was followed by Disha Kasat getting run out then Ghosh again coming for a six before finally getting run-out on the last ball short of a run in the thrilling encounter of the WPL 2024.
