WPL 2024: Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) registered an eight-wicket win against Delhi Capitals to clinch the Women’s Premier League 2024 (WPL 2024) title at Arun Jaitley Stadium on Sunday. Indian youngster Shreyanka Patil and Australian spinner Sophie Molineux claimed a combined seven wickets to bundle the Meg Lanning-led Delhi Capitals out on 113.
Later on, RCB’s top order played important knocks to chase down the low target with eight wickets and 3 balls in hand as well. Also, with this win, their 16-year-long wait for the trophy finished as well as the men’s team lost three times in the Indian Premier League finals (2009, 2011 and 2016). Captain Smriti Madhana finally scripted history.
Shreyanka Patil took four wickets for 12 to clinch the Purple Cap and Ellyse Perry smashed an unbeaten 35 to win the Orange Cap as well. As far as the match is concerned, Delhi Capitals were off to a great start after winning the toss in the final.
Meg Lanning and Shafali Verma helped Delhi post 61 runs in the powerplay before Sophie Molineux provided her side the first breakthrough in the eighth over. She then claimed two more wickets in the form of Shafali Verma, Alice Capsey, and Jemimah Rodrigues to keep her side in the game as well.
Shreyanka took Meg Lanning’s big wicket and then picked up three more to produce the best figures in the WPL final, 4 for 12. Shafali Verma top-scored with 44 off 27 balls but her important knock came for the losing side.
Royal Challengers Bangalore also enjoyed an impressive start from Smriti Mandhana and Sophie Devine who stitched 49 runs for the opening wicket. Delhi bowlers tried their best but they couldn’t restrict the opponents. Richa Ghosh and in-form Ellyse Perry kept their calm and sealed the deal in the final over.
