Finally, the Women’s Premier League (WPL 2023) is here, and the first season will start on March 4, 2023. The five teams are the UP Warriorz, Mumbai Indians, Delhi Capitals, Gujarat Giants, and Royal Challengers Bangalore.
From the Women’s Premier League auctions, Delhi Capitals has collected a solid combination of young and experienced players. For the first game, Jonathan Batty will serve as the Delhi franchise’s coach. Hemlata Kala, a former international for India, and Lisa Keightley, a former international for Australia, will assist him.
On Monday, February 28, the team’s first-ever practice was held in Mumbai under the close supervision of head coach Jonathan Batty.
Speaking of the talented group of DC players ahead of the Women’s Premier League’s inaugural season, Batty commented, “The players started to gel straightaway in our first practice session. The talent is outstanding in our group. I was impressed with how the players batted during the session.”
The members of the DC camp need to swiftly get to know one another, Batty continued, “It’s challenging in franchise tournaments. As a coaching group, we have got to know the players well and players should get to know each other quickly as well.”
The head coach also stated that the Delhi Capitals have a chance to advance to the finals, “We have compiled a really strong squad, a super group of players. If we can get the players performing at their maximum potential in the tournament, then we should hopefully qualify for the Final. But as a coaching group, we have to ensure that our players are the best versions of themselves every day.”
The Delhi Capitals will encounter Royal Challengers Bangalore in the WPL 2023 opener on Sunday, March 5, 2023, at Mumbai’s Brabourne Stadium.
The Capitals’ batting line-up, which features players like Alice Capsey, Shafali Verma, Jemimah Rodriguez, and Meg Lanning, is their greatest asset. They all have a strong argument for batting in the top order because they are all demonstrated batters in the shortest format.
Even though Marizanne Kapp is a well-known hard hitter, Shikha Pandey, Taniya Bhatia, and the others could be late bloomers with the bat.
The spin trio of Radha Yadav, Jess Jonassen, and Poonam Yadav, none of whom are regarded as great in the game’s shortest format, makes the Capitals’ bowling team appear a little weak. Without a certain, the fast bowlers Titas Sadhu, Shikha Pandey, and Marizanne Kapp—all stars in the Under-19 division—are threatening. But none of them could be regarded as match-winners thus far.
Delhi Capitals’ bowling lineup needs to gel if they are to win the WPL. A perfect game for the club would have Shafali Verma scoring 30 to 40 early runs at the top, Rodriguez and Meg Lanning converting, and Kapp finishing the innings.
