WPL 2023: Three Reasons Why Alyssa Healy Is The Right Choice As UP Warriorz Captain

The Women’s Premier League’s (WPL 2023) inaugural season will begin on March 4. Recently, five franchises purchased numerous players in the auction and added them to their rosters. Prior to the start of the season, all five teams are releasing the names of their captains at the same time.

Alyssa Healy, the Australian opener, was named the UP Warriorz’s captain for the Women’s Premier League’s inaugural season on Wednesday. Six foreign players, including Healy, made up the UP Warriorz’s powerful roster at the WPL Player Auctions in Mumbai.

Alyssa Healy was chosen as the UP Warriorz team’s first captain instead of Indian all-rounder Deepti Sharma, which suggests that the team’s administration was impressed with the manner she led the Australians throughout that series.

“I am delighted to have the chance to captain the UP Warriorz in the inaugural edition of the historic WPL that will be played in Mumbai,” said Healy.

Three reasons behind Healy being named as the captain of the UP Warriorz in WPL 2023 are as follows:

Her aggressiveness towards the game

Healy comes into play with a ruthless mindset and aggressive aura towards her game which makes her one of the most powerful strikers in the world. Besides showing her charisma with the bat, she holds the same charm with her gloves too, show-casing the maestro at keeping the wickets with the quickest of the moves, significantly dismissing around 110 players in T20I to date.

On being appointed as the captain of the team, Healy said, “The WPL is a tournament we have all been keenly waiting on, and the UP Warriorz has a fantastic squad, waiting to make a splash once things get going.”

“We have a good mix of experience and youth along with the ability and look forward to putting on a show for our fans. We are here to win and be ruthless in our brand of cricket,” she added, emphasizing winning the tournament at any cost which shows her determined and aggressive behaviour that makes her one of a kind.

The record numbers that she pockets in

Healy, one of the senior-most players on the strong Australian team, has been an important cog. She got the player of the match award for her 39-ball 75 at the 2020 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup final in Melbourne when a record-breaking 86,000 spectators witnessed Australia win their fifth title.

Healy, who with an unbeaten 148 off 61 balls against Sri Lanka held the mark for the most runs scored in innings in Women’s T20Is, has helped Australia win the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup five times. In addition, the 32-year-old has twice in her remarkable career claimed the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup.

For Australia in 139 T20 games, Alyssa Healy has amassed 2,500 runs, including one century and 14 fifty-plus scores. Also, Healy won the ICC T20 Player of the Year award in 2018 for her strenuous contributions that helped Australia win the ICC World T20 for the fourth time.

Comparatively greater leadership experience than Deepti Sharma

Since Deepti Sharma is from Uttar Pradesh and is one of India’s cricketers the nation has ever produced, many fans had anticipated that she would be nominated as the UP Warriorz captain. Last year, the all-rounder led Velocity in the Women’s T20 Challenge.

In meantime, Alyssa Healy could possibly be chosen by UP Warriorz over Sharma due to the latter’s leadership abilities. She has served as captain for eight BBL games and four T20Is. Sharma, on the other hand, has not yet led the Women in Blue in a T20I game. Last year, she drove Velocity to the playoffs, when they fell to Supernovas.

Adjacently, the momentum and the optimistic energy that Healy would be bringing in for the squad just after the T20 World Cup win would prove a stake upper than usual for the Warriorz.

Eventually, Rajesh Sharma, Managing Director, Capri Global Holdings Pvt Ltd said, “Alyssa is a big cricket player. She has vast experience at the highest level, and also has the habit of winning which is what we want in our team.”

“We look forward to the UP Warriors under the leadership of Alyssa Healy playing a vital role in this journey. Can become a source of happiness and inspiration for the women of UP. I wish the team all the best,” he further added.

Anju Jain serves as the UP Warriorz team’s assistant coach under England’s Jon Lewis in WPL 2023, the head coach. Former Australian cricketer Ashley Noffke is the team’s bowling coach, while four-time world champion Lisa Sthalekar serves as the team’s mentor.
