Senior Women’s Inter Zonal Multi-Day Trophy 2023-24: Final, Day 2 Review – Match Recap, Top Run Getters, Top Wicket-Takers

The opening day of the Senior Women’s Inter Zonal Multi-Day Trophy 2023-24 Final showcased an intense battle between South Zone and East Zone at the MCA Cricket Stadium, Gahunje. After winning the toss, South Zone opted to bat first and managed to post a total of 133 runs in their first innings. Captain Arundathi Reddy was the standout performer with a resilient knock of 57 runs.

In response, East Zone faced early setbacks but displayed determination to reach a total of 108/5 at stumps, trailing by 25 runs. Deepti’s composed innings of 22 runs and contributions from Richa and R R Saha kept East Zone’s hopes alive.

The bowlers from both sides showcased skill and discipline, with Titas Sadhu and Deepti leading East Zone’s attack, while Shabnam and Sunanda impressed for South Zone.

Day 2 witnessed East Zone’s Durga Murmu, Monikha Das, Saiqa Ishaque and Suahree Dibyadarshini get dismissed successively as Minnu Mani and S Sajana got the breakthroughs early on in the day. With Titas Sadhu also dismissed for 1 with Mani getting the better of her, East Zone wrapped up their first innings for 129.

For South Zone, it was Minnu Mani who was the pick of the bowlers scalping a five-wicket haul and with Sunanda and S Sajana pocketing two wickets– it was a remarkable bowling effort to restrict East Zone.

South Zone was back for their second essay and were off to a rocky start losing Trisha Poojitha for 6. But the duo of M Durga and G Kamalini set the base for a glorious partnership of 41, till Kamalini was undone by Deepti Sharma. Subsequently, Deepti struck back to get Tamanna Nigam for 7.

M Durga was playing her solid, attacking game– holding the fort from one end and not getting bogged down by the challenges of the East Zone bowlers. Her partnership of 61 with Minnu Mani was a critical one and with Dhara Gujjar getting her out, South Zone looked in trouble.

Eventually, Minnu Mani got to a knock of 31 but with no other batter from South Zone stepping up as Arundathi Reddy, S Sajana, and S Anusha were dismissed cheaply with Deepti Sharma getting their wickets; South Zone was all out for 179.

Once again, coming to the fore for East Zone, delivering with the ball was Deepti Sharma who picked six wickets and has been in red hot form dismantling batting units with her stellar bowling. She was ably supported by Monikha Das, A B Das and Dhara Gujjar who scalped a wicket each.

East Zone had their task cut out with 184 runs needed to secure a win in the finals. They were not off to an ideal start, losing Durga Murmu for 9 and briefly building a partnership had Dhara Gujjar and Uma Chetry in the act but the former’s dismissal for 13 meant Uma Chetry remained not out for 7 at the close of the day’s play with East Zone at 30/2.

East Zone still requires 154 runs to win with eight wickets to spare, with key batters like Deepti Sharma, Richa Ghosh, and Sushree Dibyadarshini yet to come. It will be an interesting day of play tomorrow!
