Senior Women’s Inter Zonal Multi-Day Trophy 2023-24: Day 2 Review – Match Recap, Top Run Getters, Top Wicket-Takers

The Senior Women’s Inter Zonal Multi-Day Trophy 2023-24 commenced on March 28th, featuring the East Zone against the North East Zone at Pune Cricket Club Ground and the Central Zone against the West Zone at DY Patil Academy, Ambi in Pune.

Today was the second day of the quarterfinals and witnessed an exceptional display of cricket with the bat and ball.

Quarter Final 1- East Zone vs North East Zone

Day 1 of the riveting match saw East Zone pile on the hapless North East Zone bowlers to post a massive 385/8 on the board thanks to a delightful 140 scored by Dhara Gujjar and some contributions from other batters coming to the fore.

Eventually, Day 2 saw East Zone declare overnight on the score of 385/8 and put North East Zone to bat. North East Zone did not have the most ideal first innings skittled for a paltry 108. Samayita was a standout with a score of 40 but none of the other batters came to the party.

While Nabam Yapu and Sentilemla provided some resistance with their knocks of 14 and 23 respectively, it was not enough as the East Zone had a field day with the ball. Prominently, it was skipper Deepti Sharma who scalped a five-wicket haul and was supported by Suravi S Roy (2 wickets), Titas Sadhu (1 wicket) and Saika Ishaque (1 wicket).

East Zone enforced the follow-on over North East Zone and once again started well- getting rid of the openers Samayita and Felfel Pautu with Monikha Das getting the breakthroughs. Skipper Debasmita Dutta and M Lyngdoh tried to take care of the proceedings with a formidable partnership of 20 but wickets constantly kept tumbling as East Zone was chipping at them.

Sentilemla batted deep with a 130-ball knock of 32 and was supported by some batters like Monica who chipped in with 39 but North East Zone ended the day on 156/8, trailing by 121 runs at stumps on Day 2.

For East Zone, in this second innings, it was Monikha Das, Deepti Sharma, Sushree Dibyadarshini and Mamta Paswan who stood out with 2 wickets respectively, ensuring East Zone was closer to a victory.

Quarter Final 2- Central Zone vs West Zone

Day 1 of the much anticipated and well-contested Central Zone versus West Zone match had the former get dismissed for 245 all out in 87.3 overs and the latter end the day on 26/0 with Devika Vaidya and Riya Chaudhari steadying the ship.

The duo stitched a 66-run partnership but the first wicket to fall in the day was Riya Chaudhari as Dayalan Hemalatha got her out LBW. The very next over saw Devika Vaidya perish for 52.

Jemimah Rodrigues was then joined by Yastika Bhatia and added 24 runs to the scoreboard till Poonam Yadav got the better of the latter for 17 and with Humariaa Kaazi falling soon enough, West Zone was struggling at 98/4.

Jemimah Rodrigues and Anuja Patil then batted well and regained momentum as they put on a massive partnership of 155, then a well-set Jemimah retired on a score of 57 to make way for the other batters.

Yet Anuja Patil kept at it, scoring runs at will and bringing in a delightful century with Smriti Mandhana also coming in a #8 and scoring a brisk fifty. Jemimah also came back to bat but was dismissed for 69. Eventually, AA Patil was out for a well-played 122 and West Zone got to 356, securing a 111-run lead.

For Central Zone, it was Poonam Yadav who scalped seven wickets and was remarkable with support from Sneh Rana, Dayalan Hemalatha and Mona Meshram who pocketed a wicket each.

In reply, Central Zone had the Punam Raut duo get 32 and Nuzhat Parween get to 35, which ensured they ended stumps with 68/0 in 25 overs, trailing by 43 runs, setting up for a very interesting day of play, tomorrow.
