On Sunday, February 25, Gujarat Giants will take on Mumbai Indians in the third encounter of the Women’s Premier League 2024 (WPL 2024) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, Bengaluru. Gujarat Giants and Mumbai Indians had a contrasting outing in the inaugural edition of the WPL. While MI finished as the champions, GG were at the bottom of the points table.
Mumbai Indians, the defending champions of the WPL, hold high expectations for their performance in consecutive seasons. The Harmanpreet Kaur-led Mumbai Indians will be up for their second match, coming off the back of a thrilling last-over win against Delhi Capitals in the tournament opener.
Mumbai Indians had a fantastic start to the season. Harmanpreet Kaur and Yastika Bhatia played well and scored 55 and 57 runs respectively. While in the bowling squad, Nat Sciver-Brunt and Amelia Kerr grabbed 2-2 wickets. Mumbai is a much more experienced squad than Gujarat in the WPL and will look to continue their winning momentum.
On the other hand, Gujarat Giants are set to open their campaign and will aim for a positive one. The Giants finished last in the inaugural edition of WPL 2023 with just two wins. Beth Mooney will replace Sneh Rana as the skipper for this season. She was ruled out last season with a hamstring injury. South African batter Laura Wolvaardt holds the key for the Giants this season.
Among the important players for the franchise are Australia’s Phoebe Litchfield, Veda Krishnamurthy. Meanwhile, Kashvee Gautam, the season’s most expensive player bought by the Giants has been ruled out of the season with an injury. She will be replaced by Mumbai’s Sayali Sathgare. However, as the new season approaches, the team is optimistic about the squad they have assembled.
