WBBL 2023: Adelaide Strikers Hand Perth Scorchers A Bashing In The Table Toppers’ Clash

Perth Scorchers who had a poor outing in the WBBL 2023 game with the bat and the ball were thoroughly outclassed by the Adelaide Strikers who left no stone unturned to pull off a magnificent win at the Adelaide Oval.

Succumbing to 104 batting first courtesy of some remarkable bowling by Darcie Brown, Danielle Gibson and Amanda-Jade Wellington; the Scorchers could not defend the low total against the Adelaide Strikers even though Sophie Devine, Alana King and Nat Sciver-Brunt led a spirited effort.

Adelaide Strikers won the toss and decided to bowl in the 53rd match of the WBBL 2023, putting the Scorchers to bat first. They had a slow outing as the duo of Lauren Winfield-Hill and Beth Mooney were taking time to get off the blocks. Mooney was the first to fall for 1 as Darcie Brown struck not once but twice as Chloe Piparo was her next victim for 1 in the very same over.

As the England teammates Lauren Winfield-Hill and Nat Sciver-Brunt began taking things under their control, the Strikers seemed to be getting the lines and length perfect making the run-scoring process arduous. Falling to Amanda-Jade Wellington was Winfield Hill for a strained 8 off 12 and the scorecard read 14/3 in 4.5 overs.

In a span of 3 deliveries, Madeleine Darke was sent packing as Danielle Gibson undid her for 1. The situation was grim as within the 6 over mark, 4 crucial batters were sent packing which gave away ominous signs of things to come.

The experienced and prolific duo of Sophie Devine and Nat Sciver-Brunt stitched a crucial partnership in the thrilling game of the WBBL 2023 as they not only complemented each other well but also scored timely boundaries keeping the pressure off. But as Sciver-Brunt was dismissed for 32, Alana King was the next to fall as she was run out for 8.

Sophie Devine seemed to be playing the role of an anchor but her knock of 30 came to an abrupt end as she was undone by Tahlia McGrath. With Chloe Ainsworth and Taneale Peschel out for single-digit figures, the Scorchers folded for 104 in 19.4 overs.

Strikers had Darcie Brown lead the bowling charts with three wickets, Amanda Jade Wellington and Danielle Gibson pocket two each even as Megan Schutt and Tahlia McGrath got one. The pathway for an easy win was set up for the Strikers and it was time for the batters to deliver.

Katie Mack and Laura Wolvaardt gave a brisk start to the innings with some commendable batting and the latter was dismissed for 9. McGrath and Mack then coupled to produce a batting partnership through the trenches and with McGrath out for a quick-fire 14 and Mack out for 24, the base for the victory was set up in the WBBL 2023.

With the sudden dismissals of Bridget Patterson and Danielle Gibson in the same over, suddenly there was a panic in the run chase. But with the mature batting effort of Madeline Penna for 31 off 23 and Amanda-Jade Wellington providing excellent support, the Strikers chased down the total in 14.5 overs with 31 balls to spare and sealed the crucial win.

Even though the Scorchers ended on the losing side, Sophie Devine’s 3/20 was the highlight of their bowling performance while defending the total in the WBBL 2023 game.
