A good defend from the Sydney Sixers, securing their total score and leading the team to an impressive win over Melbourne Renegades in the WBBL 2023. Ashleigh Gardner led the side with her skilful bowling performance against the Renegades.

Sydney Sixers had a good game right from the beginning. With Ellyse Perry opening for a half-century and later Chloe Tryon leading the lower order, the team was led to a good total. In the second innings, with collaborative efforts, the team was able to win the game conveniently in the WBBL 2023.

The game at Melbourne’s Junction Oval was a disappointing one for the hosts. Sydney Sixers won the toss and elected to bat first. With Ellyse Perry and Suzie Bates, the two cricketing stars opening bat for Sydney Sixers, there were the least chances of the inning taking an ugly turn. However, Bates’ early wicket was a shock to the Sixers.

Ashleigh Gardner then supported Perry and the two played a brilliant game together. Perry secured 50 off just 41 deliveries and Gardner secured 37 off 30 deliveries. Their score was required for the team to lead the way and secure runs.

After Perry’s wickets, Chloe Tryon set the tone for the lower-order batters. Tryon secured 41 runs in just 16 deliveries which helped the team achieve a pile of runs. This led the team to a total of 164 at the end of 20 overs. Maitlan Brown also contributed her small share of 11 runs in just 8 deliveries in the WBBL 2023.

Great bowling from the Melbourne Renegades. Hayley Matthews secured 3 wickets in all. She bowled at an economy of 4.25 which was a major turnover for the game. She caught and bowled Ellyse Perry, secured Suzie Bates’ early wicket and caught Erin Burns for a low score right in the beginning.

Along with Matthews, Georgia Wareham picked two major wickets and Ella Hayward and Sarah Coyte secured 1 each.

With a huge score to secure against the challenging bowling lineup, the chase was indeed a tough one for the Melbourne Renegades. Tammy Beaumont and Hayley Matthews were off to a good start. A deserving one for the inning, but a weak partnership proved to be the turning point of the game.

While Hayley lost her early wicket, Beaumont continued to play a power-hitting game. She secured 43 off just 24 deliveries which was an absolute necessity for Melbourne Renegades. Josephine Dooley also assisted Beaumont in the chase. In the middle order, Melbourne lost quick wickets in the form of Harmanpreet Kaur, Jess Duffin and Erica Shaw. This turned the tables, making the win convenient for the Sydney Sixers.

Losing 9 wickets in all, the Melbourne Renegades were on a weak side. Losing their middle and lower order batters too quickly to a collaborative bowling effort from Sydney Sixers, was when they lost their game. Sixers’ bowlers like Lauren Cheatle, Ashleigh Gardner and Maitlan Brown secured 2 wickets each. Erin Burns picked one and this led the team to an incredible victory.

Sydney Sixers won the game by a close margin of 6 runs, with Melbourne Renegades securing 158 off 20 overs in the WBBL 2023. Ashleigh Gardner was named the Player of the Match.
