WPL 2024: The Women’s Premier League envisioned by the BCCI was to be the platform for young domestic players to make the most of all opportunities and shine globally. Living up to the reputation have been the Indian domestic players who have risen above the rest and made a mark already.
WPL 2024: Here’s a quick rundown of top performers in Week 1
S Sajana- Mumbai Indians
The first match of the WPL was an absolute nail-biter between the heavyweights, Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals. While the match was firmly poised and any result was possible till the last and final delivery as Mumbai Indians required 5 off 1, S Sajana came to the crease and finished off the match with a delightful maximum.
She changed the fortunes for MI leaving Alice Capsey distraught and crestfallen but the Kerala star became an overnight sensation. For those following her through domestic cricket, it was no surprise that she would come to the fore and deliver in the manner she did but it was a stellar performance for the youngster and the world to remember.

Asha Shobana- Royal Challengers Bangalore
Another star hailing from Kerala, Asha Shobana made a statement and announced her arrival to the world. Scalping a fifer in the very first match of RCB’s season against the UP Warriorz, Asha was clinical getting the wickets of Vrinda Dinesh, Tahlia McGrath, Grace Harris, Shweta Sehrawat and Kiran Navgire. It was because of her stellar returns with the ball that RCB could eke out a two-run win against UP Warriorz.

Tanuja Kanwer- Gujarat Giants
After a quiet WPL 2023 and on the back of a stellar domestic season, Tanuja Kanwer was expected to make a mark in this edition of the league. With 5 wickets in 3 games and an economy of 7.11, she has been clinical for the struggling Gujarat Giants. With good showings in the MI game scalping the wickets of Hayley Matthews and Pooja Vastrakar and also chipping in with a wily 28 off 21 in a scintillating partnership with Kathyrn Bryce.
She came into her own in the UP Warriorz game pocketing the prized wickets of Kiran Navgire and Chamari Athapaththu. Even Smriti Mandhana’s wicket in the RCB game is something she will boast of.

Shweta Sehrawat- UP Warriorz
The former India U19 Vice Captain, Shweta Sehrawat is another name who has continued to make the waves for the right reasons. Being an asset in the middle order, her knocks of 31 versus RCB and the knock of 45 versus DC were unforgettable. How she was able to rotate the strike, hit boundaries and be an excellent partner to bat with, Sehrawat has certainly turned a leaf around this season.
When the going got tough, young and promising Shweta Sehrawat came to the rescue for @UPWarriorz 💪
