Senior Women’s Inter Zonal Multi-Day Trophy 2023-24: Semi Finals Day 2- Wrap

Semi-Final 1- North Zone vs East Zone

Day 1 of the Semi-Final featuring North Zone and East Zone saw East Zone win the toss, opting to bat first and getting 144 on the board. In return, North Zone ended the day at 99/3 in 28 overs, trailing by 33 runs.

Shafali Verma was the first wicket to fall in the day as Titas Sadhu, her former U19 and current India teammate dismissed her for 58. After that none of the batters could quite stay their ground as Amanjot Kaur and Taniya Bhatia were dismissed for ducks and with Sushma Verma dismissed for 4, North Zone was 120/7 in dire need of partnerships.

Nandani Sharma batted on from one end with precision and poise but before she could capitalise on her start, she was dismissed LBW as Mamta Paswan got the better of her. With Mannat Kashyap batting on and stitching a last-ditch 23-run partnership with Priyanka Sharma, North Zone were bowled out for 144.

East Zone had Mamta Paswan excel with the ball as she scalped a fifer and with Deepti Sharma getting four wickets, it was a remarkable bowling effort to skittle the dangerous North Zone outfit.

Coming in to bat in their second innings, East Zone had the dependable duo of Uma Chetry and skipper Deepti Sharma give them a fine start with a stellar 77-run partnership. However, Deepti was the first to be dismissed by Nandani Sharma for a well-played knock of 39.

In a span of four overs, the next wicket to fall was off the well-set Uma Chetry by Nandani Sharma. Carrying on the momentum was Richa Ghosh who chipped in with a knock of 31 but was undone by Mannat Kashyap before she could go all guns blazing.

Dhara Gujjar was once again the standout performer with her knock of 58 and with contributions of 45 and 37 from RR Saha and Saika Ishaque, it was Durga Murmu’s 21 that ensured East Zone got to the competitive total of 282/9 with AB Das and Mamta Paswan not out

East Zone leads by 270 runs at stumps on Day 2 and will look to put an imposing total for North Zone to chase down in the final day that is all set to go down to the wire.

Semi-Final 2- South Zone versus West Zone

In the match between South Zone and North Zone, batting first South Zone posted 289 and in reply, West Zone ended Day 1 at 9/0. Devika Vaidya and Riya Chaudhuri started cautiously on Day 2 but the latter was the first to fall for 1 as Arundathi Reddy got the first breakthrough.

It was then Yastika Bhatia and Devika Vaidya who stitched a crucial partnership of 61 but this time it was Minnu Mani who got the breakthrough dismissing Vaidya for 41.

Yastika Bhatia carried on, scoring critical runs but the loss of Bhavana Goplani for 23 was far from ideal as the duo pummeled the bowling of South Zone, getting to a partnership of 62.

Smriti Mandhana was the next batter who kept things in check but the fall of Yastika Bhatia, Humariaa Kaazi and Anuja Patil consecutively, in a span of 4 overs meant West Zone was reeling at 165/7. Mandhana’s presence came to an end when she was dismissed for 30.

With the only other notable score coming from Radha Yadav who scored a 39, West Zone was all out for 230. For South Zone, it was Minnu Mani who stood out with a six-wicket haul and was ably supported by Sunanda, Arundathi Reddy and Shabnam Shakil, who pocketed wickets.

In their second essay, South Zone started strongly ending Day 2 with a score of 58/2 as M Durga and Tamanna Nigam remained not out. South Zone currently leads by 117 runs and would look to set up for a tantalising finish.
