The imperious form of England in the T20I series against India continued as they registered a formidable win in the 2nd T20 International at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai here on Saturday, December 9. Reducing India to a below-par total of 80, they had a scintillating bowling performance and despite hiccups, chased down the total without much hassle.
England won the toss and opted to bowl first. India was off to the worst possible start losing Shafali Verma for a two-ball duck as Charlie Dean was quick to strike as an LBW plumb in fromt trapped her on the back leg of the middle stump. It was then Smriti Mandhana who was joined by Jemimah Rodrigues and the duo began the rebuilding effort.
However, the southpaw’s stay at the crease was shortlived as Dean who was once again back got her LBW and this was a delivery that darted in from the wicket with a much flatter trajectory and misreading this fuller length delivery meant the demise of Mandhana.

The very next over saw the skipper Harmanpreet Kaur out LBW for 9 as Natalie Sciver-Brunt who was in the thick of action undid her with an angling length delivery and as the skipper pressed forward to clip it for a quick single, the ball shaping back in got her on the front edge and an unsuccessful review further proved that.
In the sixth over, Deepti Sharma was dismissed for a two-ball duck by Lauren Bell and as Sophie Ecclestone got the dangerous Richa Ghosh for 4, India was staring down the barrel with a scorecard that read a dismal 34/5.

Pooja Vastrakar’s laboured stay of 6 was brought to an end by Sarah Glenn who deceived the batter by provoking her to advance down the track but the ball however kept straight and beat her on the inside edge before making its way to the off stump.
Shreyanka Patil was also not able to do a lot more as before she could get in the groove, Freya Kemp dismissed her. All of these dismissals were happening around Jemimah Rodrigues who was playing the anchor role but her stay was abruptly brought to an end for 30 by Sarah Glenn who got her LBW.

With Titas Sadhu and Saika Ishaque further dismissed by Lauren Bell and Sophie Ecclestone, India folded for 80 in 16.2 overs which undoubtedly was a shambolic batting performance. England had a field day with the ball as Charlie Dean, Lauren Bell, Sophie Ecclestone and Sarah Glenn pocketed two wickets respectively wrapping up the perfect bowling effort.
England was off to a brisk start courtesy of their openers Sophia Dunkley and Danni Wyatt. In what could have been an easy run chase, Renuka Singh Thakur struck dismissing the openers cheaply.

But a stable knock from Alice Capsey with a cameo from Nat Sciver-Brunt started aligning the run chase for England. They sailed through the powerplay but Pooja Vastrakar delivered a back of a length, aimed at the leg stump and dragging her length was delivered to perfection as a slight exposure to the leg stump was enough to trap Sciver-Brunt.
Then Saika Ishaque dismissed Alice Capsey owing to a blinder of a catch by the substitute fielder Amanjot Kaur and suddenly India seemed to crawl their way back to the match. The very next over saw Amy Jones fall to Deepti Sharma but a calm and composed 7 by skipper Heather Knight and a knock of 9 by Sophie Ecclestone meant England crossed the line comfortably and sealed the series 2-0.
For India, the silver lining was their bowling performance, especially Renuka Singh Thakur and Deepti Sharma with two wickets apiece who stood out even as Saika Ishaque and Pooja Vastrakar with a wicket each.
