WPL 2024: The Delhi Capitals and Mumbai Indians played their opening match of the Delhi leg at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi. On Tuesday, Meg Lanning’s Capitals trounced the incumbent champions, Mumbai Indians, by 29 runs extending their lead at the apex of the points table with their fourth consecutive win in the WPL 2024. This was the Mumbai Indians’ first loss when chasing a target in the Women’s Premier League.
Harmanpreet Kaur was back into the side winning the toss and chose to bowl first. Delhi Capitals opening duo Shafali Verma and Meg Lanning walked down the ground to get the inning started and Verma was hitting the first boundary of the match to get off the mark in the very first over by Shabnim Ismail and her second boundary in the second over by Saika Ishaque and her third in the following over.
And there was Lanning joining hands with Verma to hit the first maximum of the WPL 2024 match in the fourth over followed by a boundary in the same over. Verma too lofted for the first time in the fifth over to get two back-to-back sixes before getting dismissed disappointingly at the hands of Shabnim Ismail at a good-going score of 28 off just 12 balls. The next two overs could only see a few singles which was further overcome by Alice Capsey and Lanning with a couple of boundaries in the eighth over.

That was followed by a silent ninth over that only got two singles but the next over saw Capsey’s wicket in almost quick succession as Hayley Matthews bowled her out for 19 off 20 balls.

Lanning, from the other end, kept the scoreboard moving gigantically with enormous hits in the names of a couple of boundaries mingled with another maximum in the 12th over that amounted to the score at 109 for the loss of 2 but she too had to depart on an unfortunate note on the last ball of the 13th over only after smashing one more boundary to her account.
The 14th and 15th over could see some good rotation of strikes to bring a few singles which was laid ahead in the 16th over with two of Jemimah Rodrigues’ and one of Marizanne Kapp’s boundaries. Rodrigues looked in good touch today as she smashed the balls in style to get two more boundaries in the 17th over along with keeping in mind to rotate the strikes to get the scoreboard moving from both ends but that failed in the following over that saw Kapp’s dismissal as Saika Ishaque’s breakthrough.

But Rodrigues today helped her side enormously as she kept the score surging every next moment as she got two boundaries in the 17th over followed by a four and two more back-to-back maximums in the 19th over. And Rodrigues concluded the inning in style with a six and four to sum the total up at 192 for the loss of 4.

The first over of the chase started with some mix of emotions for Mumbai Indians as Yastika Bhatia had to depart in the very first over after hitting the only boundary. The same happened with Nat Sciver-Brunt as she too departed in the second over at just 5 after hitting her only boundary. And who had thought that the same scene would again take place for the skipper as Kapp dismissed her in the third over after her only boundary scored accompanied by Matthews’ four in the same over.
And there was Matthews who started bashing the bowlers for a couple of boundaries each in the fourth and fifth over before she finally met her disappointing dismissal in the sixth over at 29 off 17 balls. Although the new down Kerr started her contribution with a four but had to conclude with her only valiant stroke of a maximum followed by her dismissal in the ninth over which saw Amanjot Kaur’s boundary in succession.
A roaring beginning at home for the @DelhiCapitals 👏👏#DC maintain their 🔝 position on the points table with a 29-run win over #MI 🥳

The tenth and eleventh over of the WPL 2024 went silent which was almost a turning point in the game that lowered the run rate to some greater extent. The 12th and 13th over saw a boundary each from Amanjot’s bat which were followed by a couple of boundaries each in the 14th and 15th over which finally saw her wicket in the 16th over’s first delivery by Jess Jonassen.
And that wicket was almost the result of the match that only saw a six from the bat of Pooja Vastrakar before she too departed for 17 off 22 balls. The high-rise bars came for the last time in the match in the 19th over bringing three boundaries and the only maximum by Sajeevan Sajana which was followed by three doubles by Humaira Kazi and her wicket in the last over that concluded the total at 163 for the loss of 8.
