WPL 2024: Marizanne Kapp, Radha Yadav, Openers Hand Delhi Capitals Their First Win

The Delhi Capitals won their first WPL 2024 match on Monday, defeating the UP Warriors by nine wickets at the Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru. The Delhi Capitals dominated with both bat and ball. Radha Yadav shined with the ball, taking four wickets while limiting the UP Warriorz to 119. Chasing 120 runs, DC openers Shafali Verma and Meg Lanning both struck half-centuries to help the team reach the mark with 5 more overs remaining.

Delhi Capitals won the toss and elected to bowl first inviting Warriorz’ Dinesh Vrinda and Alyssa Healy to kickstart the inning on a balanced note with Healy coming up with two boundaries in the second over. Still, the opening duo stumbled much early in the game with Vrinda departing on a duck in the third over and that saw a frequent fall of wickets in the names of Tahlia McGrath and Alyssa Healy in the fifth over. The powerplay summed up at just 21 off 3.

Runs seemed to crawl near Warriorz with just rare singles coming their way as Shweta Sehrawat and Grace Harris were trying to rotate strikes until Harris managed to collect two much-awaited and needed boundaries one each in the ninth and tenth over before she finally succumbed to Radha Yadav’s delivery in the tenth over.

Next down in the queue was Kiran Navgire but she too was dismissed swiftly by Yadav after hitting the only six in her inning. And then there was the last match’s iconic performer Poonam Khemnar who joined hands with Sehrawat firm enough to bring two boundaries before unfortunately getting caught out by Shikha Pandey in the 15th over at just 10 off 9 balls.

But Sehrawat tried to keep the inning going with a confident maximum into the stands in the 16th over to take the play in the last vital overs but her wonderfully fought 45-run knock came to an end in the 18th over as she succumbed to Yadav’s breakthrough after smashing three boundaries in the previous over of Annabel Sutherland. The last two overs could only provide 8 runs to the Warriorz’ scoreboard further saw two of their dismissals of Deepti Sharma (5 off 7) and Sophie Ecclestone (6 off 6).

Delhi Capitals’ opening duo started the chase on a positive note with 7 runs in the first over as Verma smashed the first boundary on the sixth ball of the first over. Lanning too joined hands with her to hit her first boundary in the second over followed by Verma’s first six in the third over followed by four more boundaries and her second maximum of the match on the fifth ball of the sixth over resulting in 57.

After much wait of five overs, Lanning finally got her second boundary in the seventh over and her next in the ninth over. Verma on the other end had her day today as she added one more maximum to the scoreboard in the 12th over taking the total to 104 with a single following that which was further carried forward with the last six of the match.

And the end of the game could only see Lanning’s fifty, her wicket on the following delivery at 51 off 43 which was finally summed and covered up fluently by Jemimah Rodrigues’ winning shot resulting in a boundary to win the match for her side.
