WPL 2024: Delhi Capitals Register A Convincing Win As Gujarat Giants Face Fourth Loss

Gujarat Giants suffered their fourth consecutive loss, putting their playoff aspirations in jeopardy in the ongoing Women’s Premier League 2024 (WPL 2024). The Giants performed poorly, failing to chase down 164 against the Delhi Capitals after their heavy guns once again failed to fire.

Ashleigh Gardner had her highest score of 31 out of 40 balls. However, the GG coaches would be unhappy with how she lost her wicket. In the end, DC proved too powerful for GG, who could only score 138/8 in 20 overs. With the 25-run victory, the Delhi Capitals jumped to first place in the WPL 2024 Points Table.

Gujarat Giants won the toss and elected to bowl first and there were the Delhi Capitals’ openers Shafali Verma and Meg Lanning kicking the game off on a lofted note as Verma opened her account with a boundary and the first maximum in the very first over by Tanuja Kanwar. But the graph seemed to fall for Capitals as after the comparatively dormant second over Verma was dismissed by Meghna Singh at just 13 off 9 balls.

Although it was a big wicket for Capitals that they lost much early, the fresh down Alice Capsey partnered well with Lanning adding five boundaries to her name along with Lanning’s only boundary in between before Capsey finally succumbed to Singh’s breakthrough in the seventh over. The next two overs went silent again after the sudden fall, but Lanning hooked the fourth ball of the tenth over for a massive six in the stands.

Lanning was making things possible lately for Capitals and was heading towards a decent total on the scoreboard with a couple of boundaries each in the 12th and 13th over before finally departing after her fifty in the 13th over as Singh got another breakthrough for her team. This was followed by Jemimah Rodrigues’ another disappointing inning that concluded at just 7 off 10 in the 14th over.

And there were the fresh down Annabel Sutherland and Jess Jonassen injecting some life to the inning hitting a maximum each in the 15th and 16th over but Jonassen could only last till her six which saw her dismissal on the very next ball of the 16th over followed by Sutherland walking back to the dugout in the 17th at 20 off 12 balls along with Arundhati Reddy collapsing in the 18th at just 5 off 9.

And with some hard-fought singles, Shikha Pandey gifted a couple of boundaries followed by Radha Yadav’s LBW in the last over to amount the scoreboard at 163 for the loss of 8. The first over of the chase started with a majestic maiden by Titas Sadhu which created an uncalled pressure that cost Laura Wolvaardt a mere duck in the second over.

Phoebe Litchfield walked into the crease blatantly to hit a boundary and the first maximum of the chase which was contemplated well by Beth Mooney with two back-to-back boundaries in the fourth over followed by her and Litchfield’s shocking dismissal in the fifth over.

Ashleigh Gardner and Veda Krishnamurthy tried to hold the chase up with a boundary each but Krishnamurthy laid her wicket away in the eighth over as Radha Yadav picked another to her streak. After much wait and struggle, Gardner lofted the third ball of the tenth over for a six followed by a boundary in the same over but the wickets kept falling from the other end, this time in the name of Kathryn Bryce in the 11th over.

Gardner tried to settle things from her end with some fine strokes of smashes collecting three boundaries until she met her unfortunate dismissal in the 15th over followed by Tanuja Kanwar’s in the 17th after too much of a struggle for rotation of strikes.

Tarannum Pathan, in the 18th over, showed some valour to hit her only boundary but she too met her departure early at just 9 off 11. The chase failed to reach the total as the Giants could only add a few singles and doubles in the 19th and 20th over to freeze the scoreboard at 138 for the loss of 8.

WPL 2024: Delhi Capitals vs Gujarat Giants Brief Scores

Delhi Capitals 163/8 (Lanning 55; Meghna 4-37) beat Gujarat Giants 138/8 (Gardner 40; Radha 3-20, Jonassen 3-22) by 25 runs.
