WI vs IRE 2nd T20I: Hayley Matthews Keeps Shining As WI Dominates The Series

WI vs IRE: West Indies has been exceptional throughout the series, as they overpowered the opponents at the ODI games and now have secured the T20 games, leading 2-0.

The T20 series between West Indies and Ireland has already been dominated by West Indies as they have secured 2 out of 3 games. Hayley Matthews has continued to shine with her contributions in the form of runs and with a ball in hand.

The second T20 game at Beausejour Stadium turned out to be the decider between Ireland and West Indies. Ireland winning the toss opted to bat with the hope of setting a defendable target.

Amy Hunter seemed to have opened with similar determination but the start wasn’t much in the team’s favor. Gaby Lewis and then Orla Prendergast, the two major batters from Ireland lost early wickets. While Lewis had tough luck with wickets, Prendergast was caught by Chinelle Henry on Hayley Matthew’s delivery.

Then came Laura Delany and along with Hunter she secured a few runs. After having put up 58 runs on the scoreboard, Hunter lost her wicket securing 33 runs. Shamilia Connell fetched Hunter’s crucial wicket.

Later, the middle order batters like Eimear Richardson, Rebecca Stokell and Arlene Kelly contributed a few runs for the team and led the team to a secured score of 113. While the score didn’t seem much, it was defendable in 20 overs. The team would’ve been assured with 20-25 runs more on board as Ireland had to secure the second game so that the series isn’t already claimed.

Hayley Matthews, Cherry Ann Fraser and Shamilia Connell picked one wicket each. West Indies needed 114 runs in 20 overs to secure the game.

The score seemed pretty doable for West Indies, as Hayley Matthews opened with Rashada Williams. The two batted for quite a few overs until Williams lost her wicket to Arlene Kelly. Matthews played a sturdy game. She held ground even while a few wickets were lost on the other hand.

The West Indies batters made sure to contribute steady runs for the target to be reached safely. Shabika Gajnabi and Chinelle Henry both contributed to the last few runs for the team. Hayley Matthews lost her wicket after securing 50 runs off just 39 deliveries. Matthews played at a strike rate of 128.

Matthews played an impressive series. She led from the front and helped the team secure the ODI games as well as the T20 games.

West Indies secured the score in just 16.4 overs. A series to remember indeed. With their second consecutive win, West Indies has secured the T20 series leading by 2-0. Hayley Matthews’ lion’s share in the victory won her the Player of the Match award.
