The Indian team has secured their second game against West Indies at the T20 World Cup. An easy win for India as they restricted the opponents at a low score and further chased it down for a win.
Having secured their game against arch-rivals Pakistan, the Indian team has successfully continued with their win streak. England and India are now among the top teams of Group B; each having secured 2 games.
The game at Newlands Cricket Ground started off with West Indies winning the toss and electing to bat first against India. The team was expected to set up a decent score in the beginning in order to keep India from chasing it down. And, thus the Windies team started off on a high note.
Hayley Matthews lost an early wicket on Pooja Vastrakar’s maiden delivery of the match. But Stafanie Taylor and Shemaine Campbell balanced the team’s first inning. The two played a wonderful inning, setting up a good score. Playing for a partnership of 73 runs, Campbell lost her wicket to Deepti Sharma.
Chedean Nation continued with the team’s quest for runs. She added a few runs on board alongside Shabika Gajnabi and the team settled for a decent total of 118 runs. The Windies side should’ve looked for a few more runs, but bowling opposition made it difficult for them.
Deepti Sharma bowled exceptionally well. She picked three wickets, giving away just 15 runs off her 4 over spell. Renuka Singh and Pooja Vastrakar assisted Sharma, as they picked single wickets each.
India needed a chaseable 119 runs in the second inning to win the game. Strong bowling and on-point strategies were expected from West Indies in order to secure their first game.
Shefali Verma and Smriti Mandhana offered the required start to the team. Both played a slow but steady game and contributed a few runs in the chase. Jemimah was lost too early on Hayley Matthews delivery who even caught her for a brilliant turn of tables.
The game seemed a bit difficult for India, as there was a lack of partnership and steady on field player in the first half of the second inning. But tables turned with captain’s entry. Harmanpreet Kaur and Richa Ghosh, both played a brilliant game and kept up their partnership to lead India to the end of the game.
Richa Ghosh’s 44 runs require special mentioning, as the player played a steady game in merely 32 deliveries. She led India to a brilliant win, defeating the opponents by 6 wickets.
Karishma Ramharack secured 2 wickets. West Indies fell short of a few runs.
