Mumbai Indians and Delhi Capitals produced a thrilling contest in Vadodara, with Delhi clinching victory by two wickets off the final ball of the innings in the second match of WPL 2025.
It was a game that ebbed and flowed, filled with moments of brilliance from both sides, but ultimately, a composed performance from Niki Prasad and late fireworks from Radha Yadav ensured Delhi secured their first win of the season.
Opting to bowl first after winning the toss, Delhi Capitals struck early, courtesy of an inspired opening spell from Shikha Pandey. In just the third ball of the match, Pandey sent Hayley Matthews back to the pavilion for a duck, to give Delhi a dream start. Mumbai Indians looked to stabilize through Yastika Bhatia, who played some crisp strokes and showed positive intent.
However, just as she was settling in, Pandey deceived her with a well-directed delivery, dismissing her for 11. At 32/2, Mumbai found themselves in a tricky position, needing a solid partnership to rebuild.
Nat Sciver-Brunt Takes Charge
Nat Sciver-Brunt then took charge of the innings, displaying her trademark composure and class. She paced her knock beautifully, blending textbook strokes with power-hitting to anchor Mumbai’s innings. Her ability to rotate the strike and capitalize on loose deliveries ensured that the scoreboard kept ticking.

At the other end, skipper Harmanpreet Kaur provided the perfect foil, shifting gears with an aggressive approach. She launched a stunning counterattack, smashing 42 off just 22 balls at an electrifying strike rate of 190.90. The duo stitched together a crucial 73-run partnership off just 43 balls, putting Mumbai in a commanding position heading into the final phase of the innings.
However, Delhi hit back just when Mumbai seemed to be accelerating towards a daunting total. Annabel Sutherland turned the tide by dismissing Harmanpreet Kaur and Sajeevan Sajana in quick succession, breaking the momentum that Mumbai had built.
Delhi’s Commendable Bowling Effort
With the pressure mounting, the lower order struggled to provide the finishing flourish. Amelia Kerr was run out for nine, and the rest of the batters failed to make an impact. Sutherland finished with impressive figures of 3/34, while Pandey’s miserly spell of 2/14 in four overs played a crucial role in restricting Mumbai.
In the end, Mumbai were bowled out for 164 in 19.1 overs— a competitive total, but one that required their bowlers to deliver early breakthroughs to put Delhi under pressure.
Shafali Verma’s Fiery Knock for Delhi Capitals
Delhi Capitals’ chase began in a spectacular manner, with Shafali Verma setting the stage ablaze. The aggressive opener wasted no time, launching a brutal assault on the Mumbai Indians’ bowling attack.

She raced to 43 off just 18 balls, hammering boundaries at will and ensuring Delhi made full use of the powerplay. Her fearless strokeplay saw Delhi race to 60/1 inside the first six overs, putting them in a commanding position early on. However, Mumbai found a breakthrough as Shabnim Ismail dismissed Meg Lanning for 15, providing them a much-needed opening to claw back into the contest.
From there, Mumbai tightened the screws, striking at regular intervals to derail Delhi’s progress. Jemimah Rodrigues, Annabel Sutherland, and Alice Capsey all failed to make significant contributions, falling cheaply and leaving Delhi in a precarious situation at 109/5. With the required run rate creeping up, Mumbai sensed an opportunity to take control of the game.
Niki Prasad’s Knock Of Gold
Amidst the mounting pressure, Niki Prasad played a crucial role in steadying the innings. She approached the chase with composure, anchoring Delhi’s middle order with a well-constructed 35 off 33 balls.
Even Sarah Bryce played a vital knock of 21, anchoring the innings with composure and smart shot selection. She rotated the strike well, found gaps efficiently, and kept the scoreboard ticking despite pressure from the opposition. Her ability to mix patience with aggression ensured stability, making her a key contributor to the team’s total.

Rotating the strike and finding occasional boundaries, she ensured Delhi remained in the hunt. However, just when it seemed she would see the Capitals through, Prasad holed out to Amelia Kerr in the penultimate delivery of the match, leaving Delhi needing two runs off the final ball.
With the game hanging in the balance, Arundhati Reddy displayed nerves of steel. Facing the last delivery with victory on the line, she lofted the ball, running two runs with Radha Yadav at the other end– sealing a dramatic win for Delhi Capitals with no balls to spare. The thrilling last-ball finish added to the intensity of the contest.
Mumbai’s Bowling Effort
For Mumbai Indians, Hayley Matthews and Amelia Kerr were the most effective bowlers, picking up two wickets each, while Shabnim Ismail was highly economical, finishing with 1/18 in her four-over spell. Despite their disciplined efforts, Mumbai’s inability to capitalize on their breakthroughs and contain Delhi’s lower order ultimately proved costly.
#ShabnimIsmail gets the much-needed breakthrough, creating the perfect setup for #MegLanning.
