WPL 2024: The Women’s Premier League is heading to its business end but with the league stage matches capturing our attention, there is so much to look forward to every single day for the ardent fan.
This week, certainly was no different in WPL 2024 as we witnessed some thrilling encounters and closely contested matches.
WPL 2024: Here’s how the matches progressed
Match 9- RCB v MI: Mumbai Indians Won by Seven Wickets
Mumbai Indians raced to a delightful seven-wicket win in Match 9 of the WPL at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. MI won the toss and opted to bowl first. RCB had a disastrous outing with the bat scoring a meager 131 with no batter barring Ellyse Perry scoring anything of note.
MI backed up their phenomenal bowling performance with Yastika Bhatia scoring 31 and eventually with Amelia Kerr’s unbeaten 40 ensuring MI not just won the match but leapfrogged all the teams to the top of the table with six points consolidating their position there.

Match 10- DC v GG: Delhi Capitals Won by 25 Runs
Delhi Capitals sailed to an easy 25 win versus Gujarat Giants in Match 10 of the WPL at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. GG won the toss and opted to bowl first. Delhi got a competitive total of 163 on the board as skipper Meg Lanning got to 55, Alice Capsey got to 27 and with late contributions from Annabelle Sutherland and Shikha Pandey- rest assured they were in a good space.
GG’s troubles with the ball and fielding once again spilt onto their run chase as they slipped to 138/8 and none of their batters except Ashleigh Gardner delivered.
This match also witnessed the first concussion substitute of WPL, in the form of Sayali Satghare who made her way in for the injured Dayalan Hemalatha. This is GG’s fourth consecutive loss on the trot and this win takes DC to 6 points and right to the top of the table.
Match 11- RCB v UPW: Royal Challengers Bangalore Won by 23 Runs
In an absolutely scintillating encounter, RCB registered a 23-run win in their final home league game at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium against UP Warriorz in Match 11. UPW won the toss and opted to bowl first. Making most of the conditions, RCB scored a massive 198/3 on the board. It was thanks to the knocks of an 80 by Smriti Mandhana, a 58 by Ellyse Perry with a six that broke the glass of the car parked in the stadium and with a 21 from Richa ensuring RCB batted UPW out of the game.
The run-chase however turned out to be a run feast as the attacking opener and skipper Alyssa Healy gave a thunderous start with Kiran Navgire. Wickets kept tumbling but with Healy falling for 55, a semblance of a comeback was given by Deepti Sharma and Poonam Khemnar. Eventually, UPW fell short by a margin of 23 runs much to their disappointment. RCB replaced UPW in the third position of the table with six points and now the WPL bandwagon moves to Delhi.

Match 12- DC v MI: Delhi Capitals Won by 29 Runs
Delhi Capitals got off to a rousing start in their home leg with a comprehensive 29-run win versus Mumbai Indians in Match 12 of the Women’s Premier League at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. MI won the toss and opted to bat first but in what was a stellar display of batting by Delhi, they got to a competitive 192/4 on the board thanks to Meg Lanning’s 53 but more importantly a brilliant 69 from Jemimah Rodrigues that proved to be the difference between the two sides.
In the run chase that followed, Mumbai was rocked on with all of their top order batters dismissed cheaply and a glimmer of hope was provided by the batting exploits of Amanjot Kaur who raked up a 42 and S Sajana, the hero from the first game getting to an unbeaten 24 that still proved to be insufficient as MI slipped to a loss. DC will take 2 points and march right to the top of the table with 8.
Match 13- GG v RCB: Gujarat Giants Won by 19 Runs
Gujarat Giants finally got a win versus Royal Challengers Bangalore in Match 13 of the Women’s Premier League. Interestingly, GG won the toss and opted to bat first. In what was a stellar display of batting- Beth Mooney and Laura Wolvaardt batted with a lot of grit and resilience.
Wolvaardt brought in a brilliant 76 and skipper Mooney also whipped up a stellar 80 that drove GG to 199/5. RCB’s bowling and fielding struggles spilled on to their batting as well with no batter from the top five coming to the party. But it was Georgia Wareham who top scored with a fascinating 48 off 22.
Eventually, RCB slipped to 180/8 falling 19 runs short. GG would be pleased with their bowling effort to restrict this dangerous RCB side.
Match 14- MI v UPW: Mumbai Indians Won by 42 Runs
Mumbai Indians sailed to a massive 42-run win versus UP Warriorz in Match 14 of the Women’s Premier League at the Arun Jaitley Stadium.
MI won the toss and opted to bat first. Off to a tricky start losing their openers, Yastika Bhatia and Hayley Matthews early on, it was the solid knocks of 45 by Nat Sciver-Brunt, 33 by Harmanpreet Kaur and 39 by Amelia Kerr that came to the fore and ensured that MI had a competitive total of 160/6 on the board.
For UPW it was Chamari Athapaththu who scalped two wickets and stood out with her spell. In the subsequent run chase, UPW had a disastrous start losing skipper Alyssa Healy, Kiran Navgire, Chamari Athapaththu and Grace Harris cheaply with a terrible powerplay to show. Offering something for the scoreboard was Deepti Sharma who scored a brilliant 53 but with no other batter coming to the fore, UPW slipped to 118/9 in their 20 overs.

Match 15- DC v UPW: UP Warriorz Won by 1 Run
UP Warriorz pulled off one of the most unbelievable wins versus Delhi Capitals in Match 15 of the Women’s Premier League at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. It was a one-run win for UP in what was a closely contested match. UPW won the toss and opted to bat first.
Losing Alyssa Healy and Kiran Navgire early on, it was Deepti Sharma, the newly promoted #3 who stood out and delivered with a 48-ball 59. None of the other batters came to the party which ensured UPW ended up with 138/8. DC fans would have assumed this to be an easy run-chase and it certainly did not turn out like that.
Although Meg Lanning once again stood out with her knock of 60, the dismal performance of the middle and the lower middle order was far from ideal. With the equation still within reach, DC fell short by 1 run after some reckless batting by their tailenders costed them the game. The points table still has DC leading the pack with 8 points but with this win, UPW still keep the qualification hope alive and the table is wide open with a lot of permutations and combinations possible.
WHAT. A. MATCH! 🙌
That's a surreal comeback from the @UPWarriorz as they clinch a 1-run win💜
