The Gujarat Giants, who placed fourth in the first Women’s Premier League (WPL) season, have released eleven of their squad’s nineteen players in advance of the player auctions. The BCCI revealed on Thursday (October 19) that only 29 out of 89 players were retained by the five franchises collectively for the second season. In all, sixty players were kept, twenty-one of whom were international cricketers.
Along with Sophia Dunkley, the Australian trio of Annabel Sutherland, Kim Garth, and Georgia Wareham has been excluded by the Giants. After missing the first season due to an injury, Beth Mooney was kept on. There are currently 10 spots available, with a total purse of 5.95 crore—three of which are held by foreigners.
The Delhi Capitals, who were in second place earlier in the season, have kept the greatest number of players from their starting lineup—15—while letting go of Aparna Mondal, Jasia Akhter, and Tara Norris. Both the UP Warriorz and the Mumbai Indians have dismissed four players and kept 13 players apiece. The latter has also let go of veteran bowler Shabnim Ismail.
With INR 2.1 Crore, MI has the smallest purse among the three teams—UP Warriorz with INR 4 Crore and DC with INR 2.25 Crore—available for the upcoming auction. Along with four domestic cricket players, Royal Challengers Bangalore, who came last in the first season, have released three overseas players: Dane van Niekerk, Megan Schutt, and Erin Burns. Even so, RCB will only have INR 3.35 crore to spend at the next auctions.
