WPL 2023: Twitter Reaction On Mumbai Indians’ Win And Securing Place Into The Playoffs

Mumbai Indians defeated Gujarat Giants by 55 runs at the Brabourne Stadium on Tuesday, March 14 in the WPL 2023, becoming the first team in the inaugural season of the Women’s Premier League 2023 to clinch a playoff spot.

Being asked to bat, Harmanpreet Kaur outplayed a captain’s knock to lead the unbeaten Mumbai Indians to 162/8. Thanks to Nat Sciver Brunt’s 3/21 and Hayley Matthews’ 3/23, the Gujarat Giants were held to 107/9 in response in the WPL 2023.

The Gujarat Giants were dealt a setback at the outset of their 163-run chase when their opener Sophia Dunkley was out for a golden duck after being caught in front by Nat Sciver-Brunt.

S Meghana (16) and Annabel Sutherland (0), both eliminated by Hayley Matthews in quick succession, prevented the side from truly getting going. The Giants’ prospects, which were primarily reliant on Harleen Deol and Ash Garder, were severely dented when both were lost.

Giants were down to 48/5 when Amelia Kerr struck out Gardner (8), a powerful hitter who has yet to have an effect on the event, while Issy Wong trapped Harleen (22) in front. The Mumbai Indians continued to make progress while the Giants gained another 48 runs but lost four wickets in the process.

Mumbai Indians had encountered a setback when Gardner dismissed MI’s effective opener Hayley for a three-ball duck in the opening over. With the help of their essential 74-run partnership for the second wicket, Sciver-Brunt and Yastika Bhatia rapidly turned around the team.

As she caught Sciver-Brunt (36) in front, Kim Garth provided the Gujarat Giants with the much-needed breakthrough. Two were carried by one as Yastika exhausted herself on 44.

Harmanpreet persevered despite the fact that wickets were falling at one end to lead them to 162/8. The Mumbai Indians captain eventually reached her third fifty of the tournament along the road. Ash Gardner came back for the Giants with three wickets.

Harmanpreet Kaur, the captain said: “Very happy with the performance. The way we are gelling together I think this is the best tournament so far. Thanks to Nat, she played really well. Because of her I got some time to settle in and later play some shots. The way they were batting, we were a bit tense, but I knew one or two wickets could get momentum back into our favour. We were calculating how many overs were left and which bowlers to target, and that’s what cricket is all about. You gotta express yourself and pick your targets. We just need to keep doing the right things.”

Nat Sciver-Brunt said: “It feels brilliant. The team is on a real high and we are really enjoying it. There was a little bit of seam movement early on, I was trying not to get hit for 4s and 6s. The spinners if they bowled the right pace it was a little stoppy and gripping as well. We learnt that from the first innings. It’s amazing batting with her (Harmanpreet) and batting with everyone as well.”
