Gujarat Giants is making all the right noises ahead of the inaugural Women’s Premier League (WPL). They have announced their head coach for the inaugural season. After recently bringing the legendary Mithali Raj on board as the mentor and advisor, Gujarat Giants have signed Australian legend Rachael Haynes as the head coach. The left-handed batter brought curtains down on her illustrious career last year.
She has played 6 test matches, 77 ODIs, and 84 T20Is for Australia. The 36-year-old accumulated 3818 runs across formats in her international career. She also rolled her arm over on a few occasions and picked up 13 wickets across formats. Rachael served as the vice-captain of Australia from 2017-2022 and won 6 world titles during her career.
Rachael’s wealth of experience will no doubt be of great use to the players who will represent the Giants. Her partnership with Mithali Raj has all the potential to work wonders.
“The likes of Rachael Haynes, Nooshin Al Khadeer, Tushar Arothe, and Gavan Twining will certainly take the performance of the team notches up,” Raj said in a statement released by the Giants. “Not only have they carved a niche for themselves in their roles, but their stories of resilience will [also] be an inspiration for the team.”
WPL 2023: Other members of the coaching staff apart from Rachael Haynes
Apart from Rachael Haynes and Mithali Raj, the batting coach, the bowling coach, and the fielding coach has also been announced.
Tushar Arothe has been roped in as the batting coach. He is a veteran of first-class cricket, having played 114 matches across almost two decades. Arothe also served as the head coach of the Indian women’s cricket team for just over a year in 2017-2018. He stepped down after reports went viral regarding his differences with a few players.
Nooshin Al Khadeer will be the bowling coach of the Giants. An off-spinner during her playing days, Al Khadeer was the head coach of the Supernovas when they won the Women’s T20 Challenge last year. She was also the head coach of the India U19 women’s team that won the inaugural ICC Women’s World Cup recently.
Fielding has become a very crucial part of modern-day cricket. Gavan Twining has been appointed as the fielding coach of the team. He has experience coaching in Australia and recently worked with the New South Wales women’s team in Australian domestic cricket.
