While the teams in WPL 2023 are now struggling to maintain their positions on the points table, the last few games of the series are of utmost importance for all. Teams like Gujarat Giants and RCB are still hanging onto the game, while MI and DC have secured safe spots on the points table.
The game between Gujarat Giants and Delhi Capitals was of utmost importance for Gujarat to hold ground in the series. Ashleigh Gardener played a brilliant game leading her team from the front and helping them secure their game against the table toppers in the WPL 2023.
The game for WPL 2023 at Mumbai’s Brabourne Stadium began with DC winning the toss and choosing to bowl. The decision seemed to have been more in the favour of Gujarat, as they set an appealing score and defended it cleverly in the second inning.
Sophia Dunkley opened but wasn’t able to score much for the team. Laura Wolvaardt and Harleen Deol played mindfully, as the two gave the team the required momentum to set a huge score. Wolvaardt contributed some brilliant 57 runs and was backed by Deol’s 31 runs.
After Deol’s wicket, Gardener came in to bat. Gardener played a quick game and scored 51 runs off just 33 deliveries. This led the Gujarat team to a score of 147 runs at the end of 20 overs. Jess Jonassen picked two wickets for the Capitals and was backed by Arundhati Reddy and Marizanne Kapp’s single wickets each. No notable achievement for the bowlers.
A huge score for the Capitals to chase in order to secure the number one position on the points table. With huge responsibility to shoulder, the team collapsed too quickly. Other than Marizanne Kapp no batter was able to impress the Capital fans today. While the openers were expected to lay the foundation and poise the team for a better chase, the two lost early wickets.
Alice Capsey, Jemimah Rodrigues and other batters who were expected to perform lost their early wickets and this led to total destruction. The team lost all its wickets in 18.4 overs and they were able to put together merely 136 runs.
Brilliant collaborative efforts from the Gujarat bowlers in the WPL 2023. All contributed in their own little ways and destroyed the opponents, defending their target. Tim Garth, Tanuja Kanwar and Ashleigh Gardener, each picked two wickets, respectively. Sneh Rana and Harleen Deol picked major wickets in the form of Meg Lanning and Jess Jonassen.
The Gujarat Giants won by a margin of 11 runs. The runs seemed chaseable for the opponents but the presence of mind and brilliant bowling performance helped them bag this game conveniently.
