WPL 2023: Gujarat Giants Reveal Their Captain For The Tournament

After a riveting T20 World Cup, we are all set to witness the first-ever Women’s Premier League (WPL) that starts on March 4. The teams are gearing up for what is deemed to be the start of a revolution for women’s cricket in India. Gujarat Giants are one of the five teams that will be competing in the tournament. They assembled a formidable unit in the player auction and have now named the captain.

Aussie wicket-keeper batter Beth Mooney has been entrusted with the leadership role. She was instrumental in Australia’s triumph in the recently concluded Women’s T20 World Cup. In the final, Mooney struck an unbeaten 53-ball 74. Her calculated knock took Australia to a solid total of 156. She was awarded the Player of the Match for her blistering knock. The 29-year-old will be leading a side in an overseas T20 league for the first time.

“I am delighted to be given the opportunity to lead the Adani Gujarat Giants in the historic Women’s Premier League’s inaugural edition in 2023,” Mooney said in a statement. “The squad is keen to get the ball rolling soon and put out an entertaining and effective brand of cricket in the debut season of the WPL. It will be fantastic to have the likes of Sneh as my deputy and Mithali Raj, Rachael Haynes, and Nooshin Al Khadeer as pivotal parts of the team.”

Mooney’s achievements are exceptional, to say the least. She has won the T20 World Cup on three occasions, the ODI World Cup once, and the Big Bash title thrice. Mooney was also a part of the Australian team that won the gold medal in the Commonwealth Games last year.

Sneh Rana announced as vice-captain of Gujarat Giants in WPL 2023

Indian all-rounder Sneh Rana has been announced as the vice-captain of the side. She played only in the semi-final clash between India and Australia in the T20 World Cup. However, she has shown her value with both bat and ball in the past.

Gujarat Giants will take on Mumbai Indians Women in the first match of the WPL. This encounter takes place at the DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai on March 4, Saturday in the WPL 2023.
