The Women’s Premier League 2023 (WPL 2023) clash between the Gujarat Giants and the Delhi Capitals was a highly anticipated encounter, with both teams aiming to secure a victory and climb up the points table. However, it turned out to be a one-sided affair as the Delhi Capitals completely dominated the game from start to finish.
Gujarat Giants won the toss and elected to bat first, hoping to set a competitive target for the Capitals. But the early dismissal of S Meghana for a duck in the first over set the tone for the rest of the innings. Marizanne Kapp’s impressive spell in the powerplay, where she dismissed Laura Wolvaardt and Ashleigh Gardner on back-to-back deliveries in the third over, added to the Giants’ woes.
They never really got going and kept losing wickets at regular intervals, with only Harleen Deol (20 off 14), Georgia Wareham (22), and Kim Garth (32*) putting up any resistance. The Giants could only manage to score 105/9 in their allotted 20 overs, with Kapp finishing with a fifer and Shikha Pandey and Radha Yadav chipping in with three and one wickets, respectively.

Chasing a modest target of 106, the Delhi Capitals made light work of the run chase, winning the match by ten wickets. Shafali Verma was the star of the show, playing an explosive inning from the very beginning. She brought up her fifty in just 19 balls and went on to score an unbeaten 76 off 28 balls, with a staggering strike rate of 271.43.
Verma’s innings included 10 fours and 5 sixes and completely decimated the Giants’ bowling attack. Meg Lanning played a supporting role, scoring an unbeaten 21 off 15 balls, as the Capitals chased down the target in just 7.2 overs.
This victory puts the Delhi Capitals in a strong position in the Wpl 2023, with three wins from four matches. On the other hand, the Gujarat Giants find themselves struggling in the fourth spot, with only one win from four matches. They will need to regroup and come up with a better plan if they want to turn their fortunes around.
