Women’s Ashes 2023: Here Is Why England And Australia Players Wearing Black Armbands In One-off Test

The much-awaited Women’s Ashes 2023 has finally started with the one-off Test which is currently underway at Trent Bridge, Nottingham. However, just like the men’s team at Edgbaston a few days ago, both England and Australian women players were also seen wearing black armbands.

However, this was done to pay tribute to the victims of a stabbing and van attack in the city of Nottingham earlier as well. Furthermore, similar to the men’s game, a minute of silence was observed prior to the one-off Test as well. Meanwhile, in the incident, three people died in the stabbing, with one of them being left in critical condition as well. Both the men’s and women’s players of England paid a fitting tribute to them.

While talking about the horrific incident, England women’s captain Heather Knight said that she was deeply saddened to hear the news, and the fact that two of the victims were cricket players hit too close to home as well.

As far as the Women’s Ashes 2023 test is concerned, Australia, led by Alyssa Healy, won the toss and elected to bat first in Nottingham. Both sides would hope to leave a mark on the game. As England looks to reclaim the Ashes with a strong and in-form team, Aussies will have to step up with the bat in the absence of Meg Lanning, and veteran Rachel Haynes (now retired).

Alyssa Healy, Australia Captain said after the toss of the Women’s Ashes 2023 test as quoted by Cricbuzz: “Sun’s out and we’d like to bat, the wicket looks pretty good. There’s obviously going to be a little in it for the bowlers but I think we can get a good score. I’d be lying if I said if I wasn’t nervous but it’s an exciting time for me, my family is here as well. Preparations have been going really well, the girls are in a great place to come out here and compete. We’ll have to wait and see how a 5-day game will go, the wicket might play a few more tricks. We’ve got two debutants, Phoebe Litchfield and Kim Garth, we’ve got spinners galore. We haven’t really reinvented the wheel, we’re going to play the way we’ve played in the last 4-5 years and back ourselves to get the results.”

Heather Knight, England Captain said after the toss of the Women’s Ashes 2023 test as quoted by Cricbuzz: “We were going to have a bowl, the wicket looks good and I don’t think it’ll deteriorate. Filer and Wyatt make their debuts. We want to be positive and always look to take the game forward and put pressure on the opposition. Lauren is quick and she’ll take wickets. Same with Danni, she’s an attacking player. I think a 5-day game is brilliant, rain has affected the last few games, hopefully 5 days will give us a great chance to get a result.”
