WBBL 2023: Melbourne Stars Bundled Out For The Lowest Total As Adelaide Strikers Register Record WBBL Victory

WBBl 2023: Adelaide Strikes’ thrilling and record-breaking victory over the Melbourne Stars at Karen Rolton Oval, when they were bowled out for just 29 runs, marking the start of their WBBL title defence.

When it came time for them to bat, the Strikers showed off their power by scoring a massive 177 runs, led by openers Katie Mack and Laura Woolvardt, who put on 135 runs in just 14.1 overs. On Saturday night at Karen Rolton Oval, the Adelaide Strikers broke all previous records by bowling the Melbourne Stars out for the lowest total in WBBL history. The reigning Champions bowled the Stars out for only 29 runs in 10 overs, capping the most ideal start to the WBBL|09 season. The previous low WBBL total of 66 was destroyed by it.

All of the Strikers bowlers had impressive final totals: Amanda-Jade Wellington took 3-4 off two overs, while Megan Schutt took 3-3 off three. Tahlia McGrath and Anesu Mushangwe both claimed two wickets. With Schutt grabbing the vital wicket of Stars skipper Meg Lanning for only one run in the second over, and Mushangwe taking two wickets from her six balls in the very next over, the Strikers were in control from the outset.

Schutt claimed a wicket in the fourth over, and Wellington then hit thrice in the fifth over to put the Stars at 6-16. From then on, wickets fell in every over until McGrath claimed the last wicket in the tenth over to ensure the victory by 148 runs.

Ahead of the first-ever WBBL 2023 game, English players Dani Gibson and Georgia Adams were awarded their Strikers caps earlier in the evening. The Stars then put the Strikers into bat. With three overs remaining to the powerplay, Katie Mack and Laura Wolvaardt quickly reached 0-27 in the match. Mack reached her half-century quickly, and the pair’s score at drinks was 0-99.

They ultimately achieved 1-135, breaking the previous record of 0-131 and becoming the Strikers’ greatest opening pair in the WBBL. After Wolvaardt (47) and Mack (86) were eventually out, McGrath continued where they left off. With her rapid 34*, the Strikers concluded their 20 overs at 3-177. Mack won the Player of the Match award for her match-winning knock.

Now, Adelaide Strikers will travel to Melbourne to play against the Melbourne Renegades on Monday and the Stars on Tuesday as well.
