WBBL 2023: Chamari Athapaththu Gets A Special Reward As Seating Zone In SCG Named After Her

The Sydney Thunder have announced that, for their WBBL Derby match on November 26, a specifically designated seating area at the venerable Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) will be christened in honour of Sri Lanka skipper Chamari Athapaththu.

The designated seating area for the highly anticipated match in the ongoing Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) ninth season will be called “Chamari Bay,” in an effort to honor the captain of Sri Lanka’s cricketing brilliance.

“It’s a special moment for me” – Chamari Athapaththu

“I am truly honored and thrilled to have a dedicated seating zone named after me at the Sydney Cricket Ground. It’s a special moment for me, and I am looking forward to the match at this iconic venue. I hope ‘Chamari Bay’ becomes a gathering place for cricket enthusiasts and brings people together to celebrate the spirit of the game,” said Chamari Athapaththu in a statement.

Chamari Athapaththu has so far shown himself to be a star player for the club in the competition, scoring an astounding 374 runs at an amazing average of 41.55 in just nine matches. In addition to defeating England in the T20I series and New Zealand in the ODI series, she guided Sri Lanka to a silver medal in the women’s T20 competition at the Asian Games.
