WBBL 06: Fixtures Announced with More Televised Matches in Store

KEY FEATURES:

• WBBL 06 to be played as a stand-alone tournament.

• 59 matches will take place where 26 matches to be televised and the rest 33 to be live-streamed.

• Tournament will begin on October 17 and the final will take place on November 29.

Cricket Australia announced the fixtures of the upcoming edition of the Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) on Wednesday (July 15). 59 games will take place in each team’s home city while the venues might be changed amid the uncertainty of the COVID-19 pandemic outbreak.

WBBL 06, is scheduled to begin on October 17 which is going to be the second standalone season. The season will witness more broadcast matches where the final will take place on November 29. While the season will begin in Brisbane and Perth, Hobart and Adelaide will host matches in the second weekend. Notably, the group league matches will end in Melbourne on November 21-22.

A three-week mid-season Sydney hub has been added for all eight teams; a measure that was taken to add flexibility to the fixture because of the uncertainties around travel and border restrictions owing to the pandemic situation. three venues – North Sydney Oval, Blacktown International Sports Park and Hurstville Oval will host the games.

26 games to be televised on the Seven Network and Fox Cricket whereas the remaining 33 games live-streamed on the CA Live app and cricket.com.au. All matches will be streamed on Kayo Sports as well.

“Our clubs should be commended for their determination and commitment to delivering a full 59-game season for WBBL 06, along with the commitment shown to the WBBL from our broadcast partners Seven and Foxtel to bring more of the WBBL action live to TV screens across the country than any of the previous five seasons of the competition,” Cricket Australia’s Head of Big Bash Leagues Alistair Dobson said.

“The Rebel WBBL is the world’s best cricket league for women and keeps getting better, which was reflected in a 21 per cent increase in multichannel audiences last season,” he further added. “By focusing parts of the competition in a central location, it also provides options should the COVID-19 situation affect the flow of the season and we remain vigilant in all aspects of our planning to provide a safe environment for players and staff.”

Although, the fear was there of a shortened 2020 season this year; even the loss of its standalone status due to cost-saving measures was there too. However, WBBL 06 has retained its October-November spot but it will take one week less than the last edition.

However, Dobson is confident of maintaining the momentum gained from both the WBBL 05 and Australia’s successful T20 World Cup campaign earlier this year. Notably, Meg Lanning led Australia won the title by defeating India in front of 86,174 people at the MCG.

He shared, “We’re thrilled to be able to deliver more television games than ever before … and pleased to have delivered a fixture that includes matches in each club’s home market while also reducing the overall travel burden on clubs.”

While the announcements regarding crowds and ticket prices will be done later, an announcement on when the teams will begin signing players expected soon.
