WBBL 06: Brisbane Heat Re-sign White Ferns Duo Amelia Kerr and Maddy Green

Brisbane Heat have re-signed two international players for the upcoming Women’s Big Bash League (WBBL) – Amelia Kerr and Maddy Green. The New Zealand pair played important roles in the Heat’s successful title defence last year and coach Ashley Noffke said that Brisbane Heat didn’t take much time to ensure they both remained in the squad for WBBL 06.

“They fitted in really easily to the group off the field and played very consistently across the tournament,” Noffke said. “Maddy took on the role we gave her and showed her class and composure throughout, as well as providing another element to our leadership group.”

Ashley further added, “Amelia has enormous presence for a player so young and she thrived in the WBBL environment. I think both players got a lot out of the experience, and they were certainly key recruits for us when it came to finalising our list.”

At just 19 years of age, leg-spinner Amelia Kerr has already impressed everyone with her all-rounder skills. She is at the No.4 in the ICC’s official T20 bowlers’ rankings. She claimed a match-winning 3-8 against the Sydney Sixers in her debut and finished the season with 14 wickets and an economy rate of 6.22.

Kerr was economical with the ball during the 2020 T20 World Cup in Australia as well, where she picked up a wicket in every game while conceding only 4.62 runs per over. Her 34 from 19 deliveries against India at Melbourne’s Junction Oval nearly took the game away from the opponent.

On the other hand, Maddy Green being a top-order batter scored 309 runs in the last season. Her quickfire 56 from 33 deliveries against Melbourne Stars and a blitzy 29-ball 46 against Melbourne Renegades in the semi-final at Allan Border Field helped her side win as well.

“Understandably we’re delighted to have them back again,” Noffke added. “Both players are determined to keep improving their individual games and we’re excited about providing them with the opportunity to do that.”

However, both Amelia Kerr and Maddy Green are scheduled to arrive in Australia much before the scheduled WBBL 06 season which will start from October 17. Before that, the White Ferns will play three ODIs and as many T20Is against Australia from September 27-October 10.

“Like a lot of things now, we have some plans in place but will need to be agile,” Noffke said.

Meanwhile, 23 group league matches of WBBL 06 and three finals will be televised which is going to be a record number of broadcast matches on Channel 7 and Foxtel as well. And the rest of the 33 games will be live-streamed on the CA Live app, cricket.com.au and Kayo Sports as well.

The Brisbane Heat have now signed four players for WBBL 06, including a new captain in Australia spinner Jess Jonassen. With this, they still have a room for one more overseas player as well.
