Under-19 Women’s T20 Asia Cup 2024: Bangladesh U19 Crush Malaysia U19 by 120 Runs And Assert Dominance

In a one-sided contest at the Bayuemas Oval, Kuala Lumpur– Bangladesh U19 outplayed Malaysia U19 to secure a thumping 120-run win in the 5th match of Group B in the Under-19 Women’s T20 Asia Cup 2024. Bangladesh showcased a complete team performance, excelling in both batting and bowling to claim a comprehensive victory.

Bangladesh Post A Commanding Total

Winning the toss and electing to bat, Bangladesh Under-19s laid down a commanding total of 149/5 in their allotted 20 overs, showcasing a balanced display of aggression and resilience. The innings was built around the composed and strategic batting of Player of the Match, Jannatul Maoua, whose unbeaten 45 off 45 deliveries anchored the team through critical moments. Her innings, marked by four well-timed boundaries, provided much-needed stability after Malaysia’s bowlers struck early blows to disrupt the top order.

Solid Start For Bangladesh

The Bangladeshi openers got off to a brisk start, with Fahomida Choya taking the lead in setting the tone. Choya’s 26 off 21 balls, which featured three crisp boundaries, demonstrated her ability to capitalize on loose deliveries and rotate the strike effectively.

Partnering her, Mosammat Eva added a valuable 19 off 16 balls, including two boundaries and a six, displaying intent to keep the momentum alive. However, Malaysia struck back with timely dismissals, as Marsya Qistina Binti Abdullah and Nur Isma Dania Binti Mohd Daniel applied consistent pressure with disciplined bowling.

Jannatul Maoua Delivers

The middle order faced a brief wobble, with quick dismissals threatening to derail Bangladesh’s innings. Sumaiya Akther and skipper Sumaiya Akter contributed modestly but fell in the middle overs, leaving Jannatul Maoua to steady the ship. Demonstrating immense maturity, Maoua anchored the innings with a calculated approach, mixing cautious singles with occasional boundaries. Her presence at the crease became pivotal in consolidating the innings and allowing the lower order to play with freedom in the death overs.

Sadia Akter’s Critical Cameo

In the latter stages, Sadia Akter delivered a game-changing performance, hammering a rapid 31 off just 19 balls. Her fearless approach injected energy into the innings, as she dispatched the ball to the boundary thrice and cleared the ropes once. Her quick-fire knock ensured Bangladesh maximized their scoring opportunities in the death overs, propelling the team to an imposing total. The team’s eventual run rate of 7.45 reflected their ability to accelerate despite the early setbacks.

Malaysia’s bowlers worked hard to contain the Bangladeshi batters, with Marsya Qistina Binti Abdullah emerging as the standout performer. Her figures of 3/19 in 4 overs highlighted her knack for delivering breakthroughs at crucial junctures. Bowling with accuracy and movement, she dismissed Fahomida Choya and captain Sumaiya Akter while also claiming Mosammat Eva through excellent variations.

Supporting her, Nur Isma Dania Binti Mohd Daniel claimed 2/25 in her 4-over spell, providing vital support and keeping the opposition batters in check during the middle phase of the innings.

Despite their best efforts, Malaysia’s bowlers struggled to maintain consistent pressure in the final overs, allowing Bangladesh to post a daunting target of 150. The well-rounded performance from the Bangladeshi batters, spearheaded by Jannatul Maoua’s poised knock and Sadia Akter’s late fireworks, set the stage for a dominant display in the second innings.

Disastrous Batting Effort By Malaysia

Chasing a challenging target of 150 runs set by Bangladesh, Malaysia Under-19s were completely overwhelmed by the precision and relentless pressure of Bangladesh’s bowlers. Malaysia’s batting collapse was swift and brutal, with the entire side being bowled out for a mere 29 runs in just 14.5 overs.

The fact that no Malaysian batter managed to reach double digits reflected the depth of the struggle they faced against Bangladesh’s disciplined and relentless bowling attack. Extras, with 12 runs, emerged as the highest contributor to Malaysia’s total, underlining the dire state of their batting performance.

Nishita Akter Nishi Dismantles Malaysia’s Batting

Bangladesh’s bowlers were relentless, and at the forefront of this impressive display was Nishita Akter Nishi, whose performance was nothing short of exceptional. Nishi produced a spell of 5/3 from just 3.5 overs, taking wickets at regular intervals and applying consistent pressure.

Her ability to extract movement and maintain tight lines was evident as she accounted for five Malaysian wickets, including the crucial final wicket to seal the victory. Her devastating spell dismantled the Malaysian middle and lower order, rendering the chase virtually impossible for the opposition.

Supporting Nishi’s remarkable effort, Bangladesh’s other bowlers also delivered a near-perfect performance. Habiba Islam, with figures of 3/5, was equally effective, combining control with subtle variations to keep the pressure on the Malaysian batters. Her ability to bowl at a miserly economy rate in the middle overs ensured that Malaysia had no breathing space.

Meanwhile, Anisa Akter Soba also played a pivotal role, claiming 2/5 in her 4-over spell. Akter Soba’s accuracy and knack for finding the right length kept the Malaysian batters under pressure, leading to another regular collapse of wickets.

The Malaysian batting order fell apart in the face of the relentless onslaught. Captain Nur Dania Syuhada was the first to depart, dismissed for a duck, after facing just six deliveries. Her dismissal set the tone for the innings, and Malaysia’s hopes of mounting a competitive chase were dashed early.

Wicketkeeper-batter Nur Aliya Binti Mohd Hairun followed soon after, managing a meager 5 runs from 11 balls before being dismissed. With the loss of these key players, Malaysia was already on the back foot, and the collapse accelerated.

From there, Malaysia’s batting crumbled under the weight of sustained pressure. No batter was able to offer meaningful resistance, and wickets fell regularly at every stage. Irdina Beh Nabil, who contributed just 3 runs off 21 balls, was dismissed, followed by Nur Izzatul Syafiqa, who managed just 3 off 9 balls. Other batters such as Nuriman Hidayah, Nazatul Hidayah Husna Binti Razali, and Suabika Manivannan were also dismissed cheaply, none of them managing to score more than 5 runs.

In total, Malaysia lost nine wickets for a combined score of just 18 runs, as Bangladesh’s bowlers continued their relentless assault. With every wicket that fell, Malaysia’s chances of even reaching a competitive total faded, and their batting frailties were fully exposed.

Their inability to cope with the disciplined, probing lines of Bangladesh’s bowlers meant that their chase was never even close to threatening the target. The final wicket was claimed by Nishita Akter Nishi, who wrapped up the innings with her fifth victim, ensuring a thorough rout of the Malaysian side.

The 120-run victory was a statement of intent from Bangladesh, showcasing their all-round strength, particularly in the bowling department. Their bowling unit’s ability to dismiss the opposition with such ease highlighted the depth of their talent and the effectiveness of their tactics. This crushing win not only secured Bangladesh’s dominance in the match but also served as a significant confidence booster for them as they move forward in the tournament, marking them as strong contenders.

For Malaysia, the defeat was a harsh reality check. Their batting performance was dismal, and the absence of partnerships or resistance in the chase underscored their vulnerabilities in this format. Malaysia will need to quickly regroup, assess their batting weaknesses, and find ways to address their fragility with the bat before their next match.
