The Hundred 2024: Birmingham Phoenix Triumphs With 16-Run Victory Over Southern Brave

Birmingham Phoenix secured a solid victory over the Southern Brave, winning by 16 runs at Edgbaston in Match 13 of The Hundred 2024.

Opting to bat first, the Birmingham Phoenix set out to establish a strong foundation but encountered early challenges in their innings. Opener Sophie Devine was the first to depart, falling for 6 runs off 7 balls. She was trapped leg before wicket by Tilly Corteen-Coleman, a breakthrough that put the Phoenix on the back foot early in the innings.

Sterre Kalis, who came in at number two, showed some promise with her brief innings. She scored 14 runs off 13 balls, hitting three boundaries. Kalis looked set to build a partnership but was eventually stumped by wicketkeeper Rhianna Southby off the bowling of Corteen-Coleman, leaving the Phoenix at 29 for 2.

Captain Ellyse Perry then took to the crease, aiming to stabilize the innings. Perry, a seasoned all-rounder, scored 14 runs off 14 balls, including a boundary and a six, demonstrating her ability to find the gaps. However, her innings was cut short when she was caught by Maia Bouchier off the bowling of Georgia Adams, resulting in the Phoenix being 52 for 3.

Amy Jones’ Game Changing Knock

The turning point for the Phoenix came with Amy Jones, who played a pivotal role in anchoring the innings. Jones exhibited exceptional skill and composure, amassing 51 runs off just 36 balls. Her knock included eight boundaries, which provided much-needed momentum to the Phoenix’s innings. Jones’s ability to rotate the strike and find the boundary regularly was crucial in keeping the scoreboard ticking.

Richa Ghosh, coming in at number five, contributed 9 runs off 9 balls. Although her stay was brief, it added some stability to the middle order before she was bowled by Lauren Cheatle. Seren Smale and Emily Arlott then stepped in to push the total further. Smale scored 8 runs off 8 balls before being caught by Maia Bouchier off Chloe Tryon’s bowling.

Arlott played a more aggressive role, scoring a quickfire 22 runs off just 12 balls, which included one boundary and two sixes, striking at an impressive rate of 183.33. Her late surge helped the Phoenix post a competitive total. Fran Wilson remained not out on 1 run as the Phoenix innings came to a close at 137 for 7 after their 100 balls.

For the Southern Brave, the standout performer with the ball was Tilly Corteen-Coleman. Her disciplined and economical bowling was crucial in containing the Birmingham Phoenix’s scoring rate. She bowled her full quota of 20 balls, conceding just 22 runs at an impressive economy rate of 1.10 runs per ball. Her ability to maintain a tight line and length resulted in two important wickets.

She first trapped opener Sophie Devine lbw for 6 runs, providing an early breakthrough for the Brave. Corteen-Coleman then followed it up by getting Sterre Kalis stumped by Rhianna Southby for 14 runs, further putting pressure on the Phoenix’s batting lineup.

Lauren Bell also played a significant role with the ball. Despite being slightly more expensive, she managed to take a crucial wicket while conceding 33 runs in her 20 balls, with an economy rate of 1.65 runs per ball. Bell’s wicket came at a vital time, as she bowled Emily Arlott for 22 runs, preventing any further acceleration from the Phoenix towards the end of their innings.

Chloe Tryon, with her left-arm spin, contributed effectively by taking one wicket for 27 runs in her 20 balls, at an economy rate of 1.35 runs per ball. Tryon dismissed Seren Smale, who was looking to increase the scoring rate, by having her caught by Maia Bouchier. Tryon’s ability to break partnerships and maintain control in the middle overs was valuable for the Brave.

Georgia Adams, the captain of the Southern Brave, also made an impact with the ball. She bowled a tight spell, conceding just 13 runs in her 10 balls, maintaining an economy rate of 1.30 runs per ball. Adams picked up the crucial wicket of Ellyse Perry, who was caught by Maia Bouchier for 14 runs. This wicket was instrumental in keeping the Phoenix’s run rate in check during the middle overs.

Freya Kemp, although a bit expensive, managed to claim the important wicket of Amy Jones, who was the top scorer for the Phoenix with 51 runs. Kemp conceded 22 runs in her 10 balls, with an economy rate of 2.20 runs per ball. Her breakthrough came at a critical juncture, ensuring that Jones could not push the Phoenix’s total further.

Chasing a target of 138, the Southern Brave began their innings with an aggressive approach, spearheaded by opener Smriti Mandhana. Mandhana showcased her attacking prowess, scoring a brisk 15 runs off just 8 balls, which included three boundaries. However, her promising start was cut short when she edged a delivery from Ellyse Perry to wicketkeeper Amy Jones, who took a sharp catch behind the stumps. Mandhana’s dismissal was a significant early breakthrough for the Phoenix.

Ellyse Perry’s Magic With The Ball

The Brave’s top order then encountered a sudden collapse. Maia Bouchier, coming in at number three, faced only two balls before she too was caught behind by Jones off Perry’s bowling, departing without scoring. Captain Georgia Adams, hoping to steady the ship, could only add 2 runs off 3 balls before becoming Jones’s third victim behind the stumps, again off the bowling of Perry.

This left the Southern Brave in a precarious position at 21 for 3, with Perry’s incisive bowling putting them on the back foot.

Despite the early setbacks, Danni Wyatt attempted to anchor the innings with a composed and resilient knock. She played a crucial innings, scoring 43 runs off 33 balls, including four boundaries and a six. Wyatt’s ability to find gaps and rotate the strike helped the Brave regain some stability. Her partnership with Freya Kemp provided a semblance of hope for the chasing side.

Freya Kemp contributed significantly with a steady 23 runs off 19 balls. Her partnership with Wyatt was crucial in building a foundation for the chase. However, Kemp’s innings came to an end when she was caught behind by Amy Jones off the bowling of Charis Pavely, another critical wicket for the Phoenix.

Chloe Tryon added 13 runs off 13 balls, but her dismissal, trapped lbw by Pavely, marked the beginning of the end for the Southern Brave. The middle and lower order struggled to handle the pressure and the disciplined bowling from the Phoenix. Naomi Dattani managed 9 runs off 11 balls before becoming yet another victim of Jones’s exceptional wicketkeeping, caught behind off Emily Arlott’s bowling.

The Brave’s lower order offered little resistance. Rhianna Southby was dismissed for a duck, caught behind by Jones off Pavely. Lauren Cheatle was run out for 2 runs, and Lauren Bell was bowled by Katie Levick for 5 runs, leaving Tilly Corteen-Coleman unbeaten without scoring as the innings folded.

Charis Pavely’s Spectacular Spell

Charis Pavely was instrumental with the ball for the Phoenix, delivering a match-winning performance. She claimed three crucial wickets for just 21 runs in her 20 balls. Her dismissals of Kemp and Tryon were pivotal in derailing the Brave’s chase. Perry also shone with the ball, finishing with figures of 3 for 21 in her 15 balls, her early breakthroughs setting the tone for the Phoenix’s defence.

Hannah Baker and Katie Levick contributed effectively, with each taking a wicket and maintaining tight control. Baker’s figures were 1 for 21 in her 20 balls, while Levick’s economy was notable, conceding just 16 runs in her 17 balls and taking the final wicket of Lauren Bell.

Amy Jones’ exceptional work behind the stumps, taking six catches, was a standout feature of the match. Her sharp wicketkeeping and pivotal runs made her a deserving Player of the Match. The Southern Brave were ultimately bowled out for 121 in 97 balls, falling short by 16 runs. This comprehensive team effort by the Phoenix, highlighted by disciplined bowling and stellar fielding, secured them a well-earned victory.
