West Indies and India square off in the last group-stage game on Monday in the T20I Tri-Series 2023 being held in South Africa. West Indies will hope to salvage a win from the tri-series as they are yet to register a victory in the three matches they have played so far. India and South Africa have already made it to the finals. West Indies won a T20I in September 2022 against New Zealand.
Since then, they have lost 12 consecutive T20Is – 5 Against England, 4 against New Zealand, 2 against South Africa, and 1 against India. Another loss would make it 13 straight losses for them. Not the ideal run of results a team would like to have, going into the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.
India, on the other hand, has shown signs of improvement in all three departments, from the series they played at home against Australia. They lost the series 1-4 but bounced back strongly in this tri-series. In the first match, they registered a relatively comfortable win against South Africa. They followed it up with a comprehensive win against West Indies.
In their previous encounter, India made 167/2 in 20 overs. Smriti Mandhana (74 off 51 balls) and Harmanpreet Kaur (56 off 35 balls) peaked for India with the bat. For West Indies, Shanika Bruce was impressive as she had figures of 1/25 in 4 overs. With the bat, the Hayley Matthews-led side could only manage 111/4 in 20 overs, handing India a 56-run win. Shemaine Campbelle top scored with 47 but she used up 57 deliveries. Hayley remained not out on 34 but it was a scratchy knock.
