Sripali Weerakkody Announces Her Retirement from International Cricket

Sri Lankan speedster Sripali Weerakkody has called it a day on her international cricket on Wednesday (July 22). The 34-year-old who made her but in 2006, has played 89 ODIs and 58 T20Is for Sri Lanka.

While her 58 ODI wickets came at 35.62, her 31 T20I wickets came at 29.32. Sripali, who was also featured in the team that won the bronze medal in the 2014 Asian Games, has scored 931 runs as well.  She last played her international matches in the T20 World Cup in 2018 in West Indies.

She was a part of the 2009, 2013 and 2017 ICC Cricket World Cup team. whereas played five T20 World Cups in 2009, 2010, 2012, 2014 and 2018.

“I have decided to call it a day. So I feel this is the right time for me,” said Sripali Weerakkody in a statement to Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC).

Recently, Sripali Weerakkody had become the first Sri Lanka player to qualify as a Master and Fitness trainer and had been certified by the Australian Institute of Fitness.

“According to the sources close to her family and friends, the 34-year-old Sripali now wants to build her career in international training,” she said a report on bdcrictime.

“This had been my dream as a female cricketer in the Sri Lankan National pool after 16 years of international cricket. Most people used to ask me why I was not to been seen on the field last year and this was the result of my absence.  Now I can train any international team and travel to any country for training with these qualifications,” Sripali Weerakkody concluded.
