Sometimes, the most extraordinary victories emerge from the least expected places. Such is the inspiring tale of Simran Shaikh, a young woman cricketer from Dharavi, Mumbai, who rose against adversity to carve her name in the history of Indian cricket. With a stunning bid of Rs 1.9 crore at the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025 auction, Simran’s journey embodies grit, resilience, and unshakable determination.
The Humble Beginnings in Dharavi
Simran’s story began in Dharavi, Asia’s largest slum—a place where survival itself is an achievement. Born on January 12, 2002, Simran grew up amid narrow lanes, makeshift homes, and harsh realities. In a community where cricket was predominantly a boys’ game, her passion sparked endless debates and disapproval.
For every stride Simran took on the cricket pitch, she battled age-old stereotypes. “Girls belong in the kitchen, not on the field,” was a recurring sentiment in her neighborhood. However, Jahid’s unwavering support shielded her.
“People would tell him to stop wasting money on me, but my father didn’t listen,” Simran shared in an interview. This defiance marked the beginning of her relentless pursuit of excellence.
Rising Like a Phoenix
Simran’s natural talent caught the eye when she began playing with boys in Dharavi’s local matches. Coaches at the United Club saw her potential, and soon, she was part of Mumbai’s U19 Women’s Cricket Team. The transition from street cricket to professional leagues was far from smooth. She encountered formidable opponents, tough coaching regimens, and the constant struggle to prove herself.
In 2022, Simran was picked for the UP Warriorz squad in the WPL. However, her performance failed to meet expectations. The following season, she went unsold—a crushing blow for any budding athlete. Simran didn’t let these setbacks define her. Instead, she doubled down on her training, focusing on honing her skills and staying mentally resilient.
The 2023 Senior Women’s T20 Trophy was the stage for Simran’s comeback. Scoring 176 runs across 11 matches, she showcased her growth and adaptability. Scouts and selectors began to take notice, paving the way for her historic WPL 2025 auction moment.
The Turning Point: WPL 2025 Auction
Simran became the talk of the town when Gujarat Giants placed a record-breaking Rs 1.9 crore bid. Coach Michael Klinger highlighted her explosive batting power and knack for high strike rates, deeming her the team’s asset for creating a winning culture.
Klinger said, “We were targeting Dottin and Simran. They bring in power and batting at a high strike rate. That often creates a winning culture, so I’m really excited for our first two picks”.
Jahid’s sacrifices paid off, changing the trajectory of the family’s life. For Simran, the auction victory meant more than financial security—it symbolized the realization of dreams that had once seemed unattainable.

“I remember people telling my father, ‘Jahid, kya kar raha hai tu? (What are you doing?). It is time she learns ghar ka kaam (household work). Sports won’t get her anywhere.’ But my father didn’t ask me to stop playing. Today, the same people have come to congratulate our family,” Simran recalled in her voice full of emotion.
“Zindagi bhar yeh gali-kuchar mein nikal diya. Zhopde mein rahe. (Our whole lives we have lived near narrow lanes with open gutters in the slum). Eleven people in our family live in two rooms. Now with this money, we will buy a good house and live a decent life,” Jahid said.
While fame comes with glory, it also brings immense pressure. Simran will need to adapt to the high-stakes demands of professional cricket while staying grounded in her roots.
