Senior Women’s One Day Challenger Trophy 2025: Here’s How Day 2 Unfolded
Match 5: Team D vs Team E- Team D Won By 40 Runs
The clash between Team D and Team E in the Senior Women’s One Day Challenger Trophy at Sri Ramachandra Medical College, Chennai, turned out to be an engaging contest, with Team D emerging victorious by 40 runs. Winning the toss, Team E elected to field, setting the stage for an intense 50-over battle.
Batting first, Team D posted a competitive 263/7 in their allotted overs, riding on vital contributions from their middle-order batters. The innings started cautiously, with openers Vrushali Bhagat and Anushka Sharma struggling to accelerate against disciplined bowling. Bhagat managed 21 off 56 deliveries, while Sharma added a brisker 15 off 26 balls before both fell to incisive spells by Amanjot Kaur and Vasavi Akhila Pavani.
The real momentum for Team D came courtesy of a splendid partnership between Reema Sisodia and Kanika Ahuja, who added 105 runs for the third wicket. Sisodia played an anchoring role with her composed 61 off 79 balls, striking eight boundaries. Ahuja, the eventual Player of the Match, was the aggressor, smashing 65 off 60 deliveries, laced with five fours and two sixes, to maintain a healthy scoring rate.
Even after Ahuja’s dismissal, the lower middle order, particularly wicketkeeper Laxmi Yadav’s unbeaten 40 off 33 balls, ensured the scoreboard kept ticking. Monica C Patel’s 22 off 27 balls also proved handy. The 25 extras conceded by Team E further boosted Team D’s total.
In response, Team E’s chase lacked the consistency required to scale the target. Their innings began positively, with captain S Shubha scoring a quick 34 off 37 balls and forging a 54-run opening stand with wicketkeeper-batter Nandini Kashyap, who contributed 26 off 41 deliveries. However, once Shubha was dismissed by Shuchi Uapdhyay, the innings started losing momentum. The quick fall of Kashyap and P Bala, who was run out for a duck, further compounded their woes.
Shweta Sehrawat tried to steady the ship with a gritty 34 off 53 balls, including a couple of sixes, but her efforts weren’t enough as wickets kept tumbling at regular intervals. Amanjot Kaur’s 16 and Madhu’s cameo of 11 provided some hope, but it was Ayushi Soni who stood out for Team E with an unbeaten 61 off 90 balls. Despite her resilience, Team E’s innings could not gather the pace required in the middle and final overs. The team eventually finished at 223/9, 40 runs short of the target.
Team D’s bowlers deserve credit for their disciplined effort. Sushree Dibyadarshini was the pick of the bowlers, claiming 3/36 in her 10 overs. Her double breakthroughs of Amanjot Kaur and Madhu in crucial moments put Team D firmly in command. Kanika Ahuja chipped in with two wickets, while skipper Saika Ishaque and Shuchi Uapdhyay each picked one. The bowling unit collectively ensured that Team E’s batters were unable to form lasting partnerships, with the highest stand being 55 runs between Sehrawat and Soni.
The 40-run victory highlighted Team D’s all-round prowess. Their middle-order batting, combined with sharp fielding and effective bowling, proved too strong for Team E. With this win, Team D secured four points, while Team E went home empty-handed.
Kanika Ahuja’s all-round brilliance, which included her explosive 65 and two wickets, earned her the Player of the Match accolade, capping a fine performance in an entertaining game of cricket.
Match 6: Team A vs Team C- Team A Won By 4 Wickets
In a thrilling encounter at the SSN College Ground in Chennai, Team A clinched a nail-biting victory over Team C in the Senior Women’s One Day Challenger Trophy, winning by four wickets with 28 balls to spare. The game showcased a blend of resilience, strategic gameplay, and individual brilliance, leaving fans thoroughly entertained.
After winning the toss and electing to bat, Team C posted a competitive 242 runs in their allotted 50 overs. Their innings was anchored by Henrietta Pereira, who compiled a patient 52 off 88 balls, displaying grit and determination against a disciplined bowling attack.
Supporting her was the skipper, Sneh Rana, who contributed 35 runs off 67 deliveries, although her strike rate highlighted the challenges faced by Team C’s batters in maintaining momentum. The lower order, however, brought the innings to life, with K P Choudhary smashing a quickfire 40 off 28 balls at a strike rate of 142.86. Kashvee Gautam added a handy 23 not out, ensuring the team reached a defendable total.
The bowling for Team A was spearheaded by Arundathi Reddy, who picked up crucial wickets, finishing with figures of 3/35 in her eight overs. She dismissed both openers, Tripti Singh and D Vrinda, early in the innings and then returned to trap Riya Chaudhari leg-before for a duck, leaving Team C in a precarious position at 59/3.
Shafali Verma, often known for her batting exploits, contributed significantly with the ball, taking 2/29 in her seven overs, including the vital scalp of the in-form Yastika Bhatia. Sanskriti Gupta’s 2/34 also helped curtail the opposition during the middle overs.
Chasing 243 for victory, Team A got off to a flying start, courtesy of their captain, Shafali Verma. Her scintillating knock of 87 off just 58 balls included nine fours and five towering sixes, setting the tone for the chase with a strike rate of 150.00. She formed a solid 85-run opening partnership with Dhara Gujjar, who contributed 30 off 29 balls. After Dhara’s dismissal, Shafali continued her assault before being caught off K P Choudhary’s bowling, leaving Team A well-placed at 140/2.
However, a mini-collapse followed as Team A lost three quick wickets, including Pragya Rawat and Arundathi Reddy, within the space of just a few runs. At 141/4, the game hung in balance. It was then that T Sarkar and Shipra Giri steadied the innings with a vital 72-run partnership. Sarkar’s composed 30 off 47 balls and Giri’s determined 43 off 59 deliveries kept the scoreboard ticking.
Although Sarkar and Giri departed in quick succession, the lower middle order held their nerve. M R Magre’s unbeaten 20 off 17 balls, alongside Sonia Mendhiya’s steady 9 not out, sealed the victory in the 46th over.
Team C’s bowlers tried valiantly to defend their total, with Sneh Rana and Kanchan Nagwani picking up two wickets each. Rana’s spell of 2/52 in her full quota of ten overs was economical and impactful, while Nagwani impressed with 2/39 from 9.2 overs. Despite their efforts, the lack of breakthroughs in the early stages of the innings allowed Team A to maintain control of the chase.
The match’s decisive moments revolved around Shafali Verma’s outstanding all-round performance, which earned her the Player of the Match award. Her explosive batting at the top of the order and her disciplined bowling provided the edge Team A needed to clinch the contest. The victory not only highlighted the depth and resilience of Team A but also showcased the competitive spirit of Team C, who fought hard till the end.
