The Senior Women’s Multi Day Challenger Trophy 2025 is set to bring top domestic red-ball action to Dehradun from March 25 to April 8. The tournament, which made a comeback in 2024 after a six-year hiatus, has undergone a major structural shift—moving away from the zonal format to a Challenger-style competition featuring four teams.
Captained by Minnu Mani, Harleen Deol, Jemimah Rodrigues, and Sneh Rana, these teams will battle it out in a round-robin format, with three-day matches determining the ultimate winner.
While key Indian stars like Harmanpreet Kaur, Smriti Mandhana, Deepti Sharma, and Renuka Singh Thakur have been rested ahead of the ODI tri-series in Sri Lanka, the tournament still boasts a strong lineup, including standout performers from the Women’s Premier League (WPL) 2025.
Senior Women’s Multi Day Challenger Trophy 2025: What Happened In The Previous Edition?
Driven by the Indian Cricket Team’s dominant performances in Test cricket in 2024, particularly against England, Australia and South Africa– the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) reintroduced the ‘Senior Women’s Inter-Zonal Multi-Day Trophy’ for the 2024 season.
Launched after the conclusion of the Women’s Premier League 2024, this red-ball tournament featured six teams representing different zones: East, West, North, South, Central, and North East. In the 2024 edition, East Zone emerged victorious, defeating South Zone to claim the title.
With this initiative, the BCCI aims to strengthen women’s Test cricket, marking a significant step toward its development.
Senior Women’s Multi Day Challenger Trophy 2025: What Is The History Of This Tournament?
In 2024, the Senior Women’s Inter-Zonal Multi-Day Trophy served as a platform to assess the BCCI’s ability to generate enthusiasm among players for multi-day red-ball cricket and Test cricket as a whole. The tournament aimed to mirror the prestige of domestic competitions like the Ranji Trophy among male cricketers while complementing the appeal of the IPL and international cricket.
The return of this red-ball tournament to the women’s domestic circuit in 2024 after a six-year hiatus, last held in 2018, was a promising development.
Previously, the BCCI had a similar multi-day red-ball competition known as the Senior Women’s Cricket Inter-Zonal Three-Day Game. This first-class domestic tournament was introduced in the 2014–15 season as a two-day format before transitioning to three-day matches from the following season.
Five regional teams—Central Zone, East Zone, North Zone, South Zone, and West Zone—competed in the tournament. Central Zone was the most dominant side, winning the first three editions, while North Zone claimed the title in the final edition of 2017–18.
The inaugural tournament, initially called the Senior Women’s Cricket Inter-Zonal Two-Day Game, took place in February 2015 in Kolkata. While no teams secured outright wins, Central Zone emerged victorious based on first-innings results in three out of four matches.
From the 2015–16 season, the format expanded to three-day matches, with the competition moving to Guntur, Andhra Pradesh. Central Zone continued their dominance, winning their second consecutive title by securing one outright victory and two first-innings wins.
The 2016–17 season, hosted in Chhattisgarh, saw Central Zone claim their third successive title, winning two out of four matches. However, their winning streak ended in the 2017–18 edition, held in Kerala, where North Zone secured their first championship.
