The Senior Women’s Multi Day Challenger Trophy 2025 got underway with two highly anticipated matches, showcasing top domestic talents in the longest format of the game.

As red-ball cricket continues to gain traction in women’s cricket, this tournament serves as a crucial platform for players to demonstrate their skills, temperament, and adaptability over multiple days.

In Match 1, Team A and Team B locked horns in a battle of endurance and strategy, while in Match 2, Team C took on Team D at the Abhimanyu Cricket Academy in Dehradun.

With seasoned internationals and promising young talents in action, the opening day set the stage for an exciting contest, filled with gritty batting displays, disciplined bowling efforts, and intense competition.

Match 1- Team A vs Team B

Team B opted to bat first after winning the toss in the Senior Women’s Multi-Day Challenger Trophy encounter at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Dehradun. However, their start was far from ideal as they lost wickets in quick succession, finding themselves struggling at 28/4 inside the first eleven overs.

Pratika showed early intent with a brisk 8 off 6 balls before falling to Arundathi Reddy. The experienced Harleen Deol, leading Team B, was dismissed for a duck, compounding their woes. Yastika Bhatia, the wicketkeeper-batter, played a few fluent strokes but was eventually undone by Sayali Satghare after scoring 20 off 30 balls. Mita Paul’s stay at the crease was brief, falling for a first-ball duck due to a sharp run-out by Tanuja P Kanwer.

With the top order back in the pavilion, the onus fell on Arushi Goel and Kanika Ahuja to rebuild the innings. The duo steadied the ship with a determined 112-run partnership that consumed 259 deliveries, showcasing resilience and grit.

Arushi Goel anchored the innings with a well-crafted 92 off 210 balls, displaying patience and temperament. Kanika Ahuja, at the other end, complemented her with a valuable 65 off 129 deliveries, hitting 10 boundaries.

Once Kanika departed at 140/5, Arushi found support in Ayushi Soni, who played a steady hand with an unbeaten 49 off 143 balls. Their 71-run partnership further consolidated Team B’s position. Arushi’s marathon innings eventually came to an end at 211/6 in the 73rd over, falling to Minnu Mani.

The lower order chipped in with minor contributions, with Titas Sadhu (11 off 24) and N R Shree Charani (7 off 17) adding crucial runs. Ayushi continued to hold one end up before closing the day unbeaten alongside Nandani Sharma (1 off 16), guiding Team B to 258/8 at the end of 97 overs.

The bowling attack for Team A was disciplined and efficient, led by the impressive spells of Sayali Satghare and Arundathi Reddy, who both picked up two wickets each while maintaining an economy rate of under 2.7.

Minnu Mani also proved effective, taking 2/68 in her 29 overs, while Tanuja P Kanwer chipped in with a crucial breakthrough. Priya Mishra, M R Magre, Henrietta Pereira, and D Vrinda all had decent outings but went wicketless.

The match showcased a gripping contest between bat and ball, with Team B recovering from an early collapse to post a respectable total. The highlight of the innings was Arushi Goel’s masterclass in patience and application, while Ayushi Soni’s gritty knock further strengthened their position.

The bowlers, particularly Satghare and Reddy, made early inroads, but Team A will now look to take control when they come out to bat.

The match remains finely poised as the next innings will determine the momentum of the contest.

Match 2- Team C vs Team D

Team C dominated proceedings on the opening day of the Senior Women’s Multi-Day Challenger Trophy at the Abhimanyu Cricket Academy in Dehradun, posting a formidable total of 405/9 declared in 85 overs before Team D responded positively with 29/0 at stumps. The day was marked by standout batting performances, resilient partnerships, and a testing bowling effort, setting up an intriguing contest for the remainder of the match.

Winning the toss and electing to bat first, Team C suffered an early jolt as Uma Chetry was dismissed for a duck off the fifth ball of the innings by Kashvee Gautam. The opening bowler struck again soon after, removing T Sarkar for 1, leaving Team C in a precarious position at 10/2.

However, the early setbacks were swiftly countered by a commanding innings from Shafali Verma. The explosive opener, known for her aggressive stroke play, unleashed a flurry of boundaries to seize momentum for her side. She forged a crucial 103-run partnership with skipper Jemimah Rodrigues, who played a composed innings of 26 off 42 before falling to Sneh Rana.

Shafali continued her assault, finding another solid partner in T S Hasabnis, with the duo adding 86 runs for the fourth wicket. Shafali’s innings eventually came to an end at 108 off 104 balls, a knock laced with 19 fours, when she was bowled by Sneh Rana.

With the team at 199/4, Hasabnis took charge, crafting a magnificent century.

The middle-order batter displayed patience and power, anchoring the innings while capitalizing on loose deliveries. Her 169-run masterclass off 185 balls, featuring 20 fours and six sixes, was the defining performance of the day. She stitched a pivotal 124-run stand with Sushree Dibyadarshini, who played a steady hand with a well-compiled 67 off 91.

Despite losing Saranya Gadwal (14) and Saima Thakor (1) in quick succession, Team C continued to push towards a strong total. Hasabnis eventually perished at 392/8 after a splendid innings, falling to Kashvee Gautam, who finished as Team D’s most effective bowler with 3/57 in 15 overs.

G Trisha also impressed, claiming 3/32 in her 11 overs, while Sneh Rana (2/110) and Monica C Patel (1/61) chipped in with crucial breakthroughs.

Declaring at 405/9, Team C aimed to put early pressure on Team D in the final session. However, opener G Trisha responded aggressively, smashing 26 off just 17 balls, striking six boundaries to keep the scoreboard ticking.

Partnered by wicketkeeper Nandini Kashyap, who remained unbeaten on 3, Team D reached 29/0 in just four overs at an impressive run rate of 7.25. Despite the attacking start, Team C’s bowlers found little success in their brief spell, with Shabnam (1-0-13-0), Joshitha V J (2-0-15-0), and Rajeshwari Gayakwad (1-0-1-0) unable to make an impact before stumps were called.

At the close of play, Team D trailed by 376 runs with all ten wickets intact, setting the stage for an intriguing Day 2.

With a solid platform laid and the momentum slightly shifting in their favour, Team D will aim to build on their aggressive start, while Team C will look to capitalize on the early morning conditions to break through and push for a dominant position in the contest.
