The series between India U19 and South Africa U19 squad commenced today, where the two young squads tussled for the very first game. The 5-game long series will be a huge breakthrough for players from both sides. SA U19 vs IND U19 1st T20 witnessed an amazing all-round effort from the Indians. The game in Pretoria didn’t seem to favour the hosts. Having won the toss, it was South Africa’s sole decision to bowl first and chase the required runs in the second half.
As Indians were invited to bat, they opened with Shafali Verma and Shweta Sehrawat. Verma lost her wicket on the very first delivery, marking it a low start for the team. Sehrawat then went in to secure the required runs with the assistance of Soumya Tiwari. Both played a good game grabbing major runs for the side. Sehrawat contributed a total of 40 runs whereas, Tiwari batted for 36 runs. Tables turned when Kayla Reyneke grabbed Sehrawat’s wicket and then Tiwari was bowled by Monalisa Lagodi shortly after.
This fused in some pressure on the Indian side but they made their way out as Richa Ghosh, Hurley Gala and Tithas Sadhu all batted for quite a while, grabbing some runs for the team and leading them to a secured total of 137 runs. Kayla Reyneke seemed to have taken the major bowling efforts. She picked two wickets along with Ayanda Hlubi who also picked two majors in the form of Shefali Verma and Richa Ghosh. Monalisa Lagodi picked a wicket.

With this South Africa now needed 138 runs to secure the game in 20 overs in the SA U19 vs IND U19 1st T20. The score seemed fair enough for both sides. Each team had an equal chance to make or break the game. Elandri Janse Van Rensburg and Simone Lourens opened bat for the South African side. A sad game for South Africa, as they weren’t able to perform well with the bat in hand. Shabnam started off with the wicket streak for India. She went on to pick both the openers and later settled for Kayla Reyneke. Archana Devi joined the wagon of taking wickets along with Shabnam and the two led to ultimate destruction.
The South African squad seemed helpless and they went on to lose major wickets without contributing much towards the chase. Madison Landsman and Kayla Reyneke tried their level best in the middle of the inning, but weren’t able to stay back longer, nor were they able to help the team with the required runs. Ultimately, to their misfortune, the South African side lost all their overs and weren’t able to chase down the required score. They were able to chase merely 83 runs in 20 overs and lost 8 wickets. They lost the game by 54 runs.
A game indeed won by bowlers. Archana Devi and Shabnam led the team to a deserving win.
