On This Day: New Zealand Put up Highest Total in One Day International

Amy Kenealy was ready to bowl the 48th over, two years ago against New Zealand. Her first ball was way down the leg side and Amelia Kerr crossed for a single. Kerr got the strike back a ball later. She completed her half-century in 35 balls with a six over square leg boundary and at the same time equalled the record of highest team total in ODI cricket across the gender.

In the very next ball, she guided the ball towards the point and took the New Zealand total to 456, breaking the 21 years old record of Highest Team Total in ODI cricket. In 1997 New Zealand put on 455 runs against Pakistan with a loss of 5 wickets. Amelia Kerr continued to hit the ball out of the park with utter disdain and took the tally up to 491, claiming 19 runs from the last over. She became the 4th player after Suzie Bates, Jess Watkin and Maddy Green to complete her half-century and remained not out on 81 from 45 balls with 9 fours and 3 sixes.

Earlier, New Zealand won the toss and elected to bat first at Dublin. Debutant Jess Watkin and veteran Suzie Bates went off to a flyer while putting up 70 in first 10 overs. Bates who has batted on this wicket T20I match has no doubt on her mind and the lighting fast outfield made the job easier for them. Watkin has proved her worth in the T20I match when she scored unbeaten 77 of just 38 balls to chase down the 136 within 11 overs. Bates pulled a ball of Laura Maritz through mid-wicket to complete her half-century in 40 balls. Jess Watkin soon followed her by completing a run a ball half-century.

Both of them put up a partnership of 172 runs in just 19 overs before Rachel Delany took a one-handed catch at Square leg boundary to dismiss Watkins. Suzie Bates was then joined by Maddy Green. Maddy Green generally batted down the order but Kiwi management wanted to give their middle order a chance to face more balls before the series against England and South Africa Tour. So, she was sent up the order and both of them made a mockery of the inexperienced Irish bowling attack.

Suzie Bates went on to complete her 10th century in 71 balls. She tucked a ball of Gaby Lewis to the leg side to achieve the feat. Later she went on to surpass Debbie Hockley to become the highest run-getter in ODI for the White Ferns. Bates was dropped by Louise Little of her own bowling when she was on 113, after hitting two back to back fours Bates added 38 more runs before becoming the victim of debutant leg spinner Cara Murray.

Though she picked up the prized scalp of Amy Satterthwaite, that didn’t stop the run flowing. Bates’s strike rate in her 151-run knock is the 2nd highest in an innings of 100 or more in ODIs. Meg Lanning had hit 103 off 50 balls at a strike rate of 206 against New Zealand at SCG in 2012. Maddy Green who wanted to bat along with her senior partner Suzie Bates for most of the time started to play stokes and became particularly aggressive against the leg spinners. Maddy completed her maiden century in 62 balls and ended her innings on 122 with 15 fours.

Chasing a mammoth total of 492, Ireland lost both of their openers within 6 overs. Though Skipper Laura Delany and Jennifer Grey put up a partnership of 63 runs, both of them was removed by Leigh Kasperek to restrict the Irish side on 144. Leigh Kasperek picked up 4 wickets, conceding only 17 runs and the white ferns went on to win the match by 347 runs. Debutant Cara Murray’s 2/119 was the most expensive spell in the ODI’s.

Brief Score:

New Zealand 491/4 (Suzie Bates 151, Maddy Green 122, Cara Murray 2/119) beat Ireland 144/10 (Laura Delany 37, Jennifer Grey 35, Leigh Kasperek 4/17) by 347 runs.
