On This Day: Jhulan Goswami Became the Highest Wicket Taker in ODI

Raisibe Ntozakhe, the no 11 batter of the Proteas and the debutant was on strike. She had faced 5 balls without making any run. South Africa was shattered that day by Indian bowling attack and barely managed to get past the 100 run mark. Ntozakhe, who was facing Jhulan Goswami, the stalwart Indian seamer for the first time in that innings, missed the ball completely and was given LBW. With this scalp, Jhulan Goswami overtook Catherin Fitzpatrick (180) to become the highest wicket-taker in ODI, on this day in 2017.

India won the toss and decided to field first at North-West University Ground, Potchefstroom. Two Indian seamers -Jhulan Goswami and Sikha Pandey started well. And while they only gave 36 runs in their opening spell, Sikha Pandey picked up two valuable wickets of Lizelle Lee and Laura Wolvaardt. After the initial overs, skipper Mithali Raj brought spinner into the attack.

Though her 4 spinners including vice-captain Harmanpreet Kaur were able to check the run flow, they failed to pick up wickets and South Africa was able to rebuild their innings after the initial hiccups. Spinners conceded 64 runs in 17 overs among themselves. while the lone wicket came in the form of a run-out.

Mithali Raj sensed the trouble and brought back Sikha Pandey. And Sikha picked up Marizanne Kapp in her very first delivery of a new spell. Kapp was caught by Sushma Verma behind the wicket, and this wicket created a chain reaction in the South African batting order. The rest of the order felt like a pack of cards and managed to score 19 runs in 12 overs while losing 6 wickets.

Jhulan Goswami, who conceded 15 runs in her first 5 overs, cleaned up the South African tail with her accurate bowling. She first picked up the wicket up Nadine De Clark, while Masabata Klaas found her wicket shattered. She became the highest wicket-taker in the ODI cricket by picking up the wicket of Raisibe Ntozakhe. Her 3/20 in 7.3 overs was best for India that day.  Mithali, with her unbeaten 51 lead guided India into a convincing victory in the Quadrangular trophy by 7 wickets.

Jhulan later went on to become the first cricketer to pick up the 200 ODI wickets. She currently has 225 wickets with an average of 21.48 in 182 appearances for India, under her kitty.
