On This Day: Harmanpreet Kaur Leads India in ODI for the Very First Time

On this day in 2013, in the absence of their regular captain, Harmanpreet Kaur, playing her 35th ODI for India was handed over the responsibilities to lead the team. And against Bangladesh, she wore the captain’s arm-band for the first time in One Day International.

Electing to bat first, Bangladesh lost both of their openers within 10 overs. However, Rumana Ahmed who scored 38 off 63 balls with 5 fours made a partnership of  57 for the 3rd wicket with Lata Mandal. After Ahmed got dismissed by Nagarajan Niranjana, Salma Khatun and Lata Mandal tried to settle the Bangladeshi innings. Salma Khatun who has scored a total of 40 runs in her previous 8 innings with a highest of 12 turns out to the messiah for the Tigers.

She went to score an unbeaten 75 off 82 balls and along with the lower order took the score to close to 200 marks. Which makes her score significant is that she only had to bat with the lower orders bat had to score runs quickly. Rumana’s strike rate of  92 was much higher than anyone else. Due to her knock of unbeaten 75 which comprised of 11 boundaries, Bangladesh was able to reach to a 194 in their allotted overs which was their highest total till then.

8th wicket Partnership of 47 runs with Panna Ghosh still remains as the highest for that wicket.  Khatun’s first half-century still is the highest individual score for Bangladesh in ODI, which will be later equalled by Rumana Ahmed in the same series.  For India, Ekta Bisht took 3 wickets for 27 runs.

Though India lost Punam Raut in the very first over, Mona Meshram and Thirus Kamini added 37 runs for the 2nd wickets.  Harmanpreet came in to bat when the score was 37 for 2 in the 13th over. An 83-run partnership for the fourth wicket between Harmanpreet and Anagha Deshpande revived the chase for India.

Once Deshpande was out for a 50-ball 47, Harmanpreet Kaur and the lower middle order took India home with four balls to spare. Harmanpreet’s unbeaten 63 came off 100 balls  and her 7th ODI fifty had only three fours. Niranjana Nagarajan and Harmanpreet remained not out to win the match without any further casualty.
