On This Day: Elegant Edwards Lights Chidambaram with a Unique Record

In the 2016 ICC World T20, England who were yet to lose a match in the competition met Pakistan in their last group match at M. A. Chidambaram Stadium, Chennai on 27th March. Winning the toss, England skipper, Charlotte Edwards decided to bat first. She was on the verge of a unique record which was never achieved by any cricketer before.

Tammy Beaumont and she came to the middle and were ready to face Anam Amin, the left-arm spinner of Pakistan. Edwards sent the very first ball, she faced, to the boundary and completed her 2500 runs in T20I and became the first cricketer, male or female, to reach 2500 T20I runs.

Edwards and Beaumont added 68 runs for the first wicket in 54 balls. Though Beaumont played more aggressively, Edwards played her natural game and kept the scoreboard ticking. Till 15th over Edwards played a run a ball innings of 43 with five fours.

In 16th over, Sadia Yusuf who was economical in her earlier 3 overs (0/10) came to the attack and Edwards hit her three back to back boundaries to pull the momentum back. She completed her 12th half-century in 46 balls and went on to finish her innings with a knock of unbeaten 77 in 61 deliveries with 10 fours. England had put 47 runs in the last five overs out of which Edwards contribution was 33 from 18.

Charlotte Edwards was declared the player of the match for her knock and guiding England to the semifinal, undefeated. Eventually, it was her penultimate match in International cricket. Three days later, England lost the semifinal to Australia by 5 runs despite a great opening partnership of 67 runs.  Edwards contributed with 31 runs.

As an unexpected turn of the event, she was dropped from the squad after their defeat in the semifinal and eventually, she announced her retirement from international cricket. Edwards, with 2605 T20I runs which came at an average of almost 33 and 12 half-centuries, still is the Fourth highest-scorer in T20I and lead the list for England in that format.
