On This Day: Devastating Deandra Dottin Smashes Fastest T20I Century

West Indies firebrand cricketer Deandra Dottin set the momentum of the 2nd edition of ICC Women World T-20 when she hit an unbeaten century against South Africa. A decade back on this day she became the first female cricketer to score a century in international T-20 game. In the inaugural match of the World Cup, South African skipper Crizelda Britswon the toss and decided to field first.

Her decision turned out to be fruitful when her bowlers reduced West Indies to 52 for 4 within the first half of their allotted overs. However, she didn’t have the minute hint of what was awaiting her fate. Deandra Dottin who had scored 217 runs with an average of 18 in her previous 15 appearances in nation colour, came to crease after the fall of 4th wicket. Though she was inconsistent with her runs, strike rate.

Though she was inconsistent with her runs, the strike rate of 124 made her deadliest prospect for any side. That day South Africa was on the receiving side. The most incredible feature of Dottin’s innings was that she came in to bat in the tenth over, and yet managed to reach three figures off just 38 balls; her second fifty came off just 13. Dottin started her innings by hitting a four against Dane van Niekerk in the 2nd ball she faced.

She never looked back from there. Her first fifty came off just 25 balls while hitting 4 fours and 3 sixes. Her two of her sixes came from the 14th over when Chloe Tyron was on the receiving end. The highlight of the Dottin’s innings came in the 17th over when she hit 4 sixes against left-arm spinner Charlize van der Westhuizen. In the first ball of the 19th over Dottin took two runs and completed her first T-20I century in just 38 balls.

By doing so she hit the fastest T-20I century, across the gender. Her record survived 7 years until David Miller scored a century in 35 balls against Bangladesh in 2017. She hit 7 fours and 9 sixes on her way to the record. Due to her batting, West Indies scored 124 runs in the last 60 balls out of which 112 came from Dottin’s bat. This is the highest individual score by a West Indies Women Cricketer.

Chasing a mammoth total to win South Africa made a gallant effort. Shandre Alvida Fritz’s 52 was well supported by skipper Crizelda Brits’s 43. But both of them got run out at crucial juncture of the match. Despite the blitz innings of Mignon Du Prezz South Africa fell short of 15 runs.

Brief Score:

West Indies 175/5 (Deandra Dottin 112*, Chloe Tyron 2/ 28) beat South Africa 158/4 (Shandre Alvida Fritz 52, Pamela Lavine 1/14)
