On This Day: Amelia Kerr Creates Record; Smashes Highest Individual Score in ODI

Amy Kenealy was ready to bowl the final over of the innings. It had been a hard day for them as a teenager thrashed them all round the park with utter disdain. A couple of over earlier that teenager became the Youngest Cricketer to score a double hundred in ODI. Kate Broadmore picked up a couple of singles in the first three balls of the over and gave the strike back to that leg spinner, Amelia Kerr who has been promoted up the order. She hit the fourth ball of the over for four through square leg and the next ball through the extra cover boundary.

She reached to 226, only 4 runs away to break the record of highest individual runs in ODI.  She hadn’t even heard the name of Belinda Clerk, who 21 years ago became the first cricketer to score a double hundred in ODI when she made an unbeaten 229 against Denmark in 1997 World Cup. The last ball of the innings was on a good length and on the middle stump line which was hoicked by Kerr for 6 through deep midwicket, breaking the record of the highest individual score in ODI.

Suzie Bates won the toss, sent Amy Satterthwaite and Amelia Kerr to open the batting. The Kiwis had scored more than 400 runs in previous two matches, including a record 491 in the first match of the series. Bates had cleared earlier that her goal was to give her batters more chances to bat for the longer period. As the part of the experiment, she moved Maddy Green up the order in previous matches, while promoting up Amelia Kerr in this match.

Amelia Kerr has been a found of New Zealand who despite her young age has impressed everyone with her leg-spin. She also had a good number with the bat in the domestic circuit while scoring 152 for Wellington U-21 against Otago.  Both Satterthwaite and Kerr started well, scored 78 runs in the first 10 overs. Seasoned campaigner Satterthwaite was more aggressive among the two, giving Amelia a chance to settle down.

The youngster then took the charge in the 14th over. Though She hit Gaby Lewis only a four in that over, she found her touch after that. She broke the shackle after completing her half-century and took only 32 balls to complete her next 50 to become the youngest ever Kiwi to score an ODI hundred.

Amelia Kerr, who was opening the innings for the first time in her career didn’t stop there. Along with another spinner Legh Kasperek she went on to put the highest 2nd wicket partnership in ODI, beating the previous best of 262 made by Haidee Tiffin and Suzie Bates.  17 years old youngster in the course of her batting went on to trample records after records.

After completing her 150 runs mark, in the 42nd over, she hit two consecutive boundaries against Rachel Delany to became the highest individual scorer for White Ferns in ODI. First, she sent the ball through long leg followed by one through mid-wicket boundary. Kerr was dropped by Ireland several times and she made full use of the opportunity by becoming the youngest cricketer to score a double hundred in any format of cricket across the gender.

It was a day for Kerr to remember. After her batting prominence, she ripped apart the inexperienced Ireland batting attack. Kerr was bought into the attack in the 23rd over. Ireland had managed to put up a 45-run partnership for the 4th  wicket. Batters failed to read the googlies and failed to score any run from her first over. She struck back in the very next over when opener  Una Raymond Hoey, the top scorer for Ireland, was bowled by her.

In her fourth over Kerr picked up another one. This time Shauna Kavanagh who was batting on 29 went forward to defend the ball, only to find that the ball spun well enough to dislodge the bell. In a spell of 5 overs, Amy Kenealy became her 3rd victim after hitting her a four, and Ireland lost their 4 wickets in just 18 runs. Kerr ended her first spell with a tally of 5-2-13-3.

She was again brought back into the attack in the 41st over, 10 overs after her first spell came to an end. And she wrapped up the innings within two overs. She picked up 5 wickets without any assistance from the fielders. She completed her day with 7-2-17-5.  Thus, she became the first cricketer to score a double hundred and pick up 5 wickets in ODI across the gender.
