Match 32: Somerset vs The Blaze – The Blaze Won By 4 Wickets

In an enthralling contest at Loughborough in the ECB Women’s One-Day Cup, The Blaze chased down a formidable total set by Somerset to clinch a four-wicket victory with just six balls to spare.

After winning the toss and electing to field first, The Blaze faced a disciplined Somerset batting unit that posted a competitive 304 for 7 in their allotted 50 overs.

Somerset began strongly with openers Rebecca Odgers and Emma Corney laying a solid foundation. Odgers played fluently for her 50 off 57 balls, striking nine boundaries, before being run out by Maddy Green.

Corney contributed a steady 38 off 54 before falling to Josie Groves, and the innings gained momentum with captain Sophie Luff leading from the front. Luff anchored the middle overs with a composed 72 off 76 balls, featuring seven fours and a six.

Fran Wilson chipped in with a brisk 28, while Amanda-Jade Wellington provided a late surge with an explosive 48 off just 25 deliveries, hammering six boundaries. Contributions from Alex Griffiths (25) and Chloe Skelton (13*), coupled with 22 extras, helped Somerset breach the 300-run mark.

The Blaze bowlers struggled to contain the scoring, with only Georgia Elwiss managing to bowl economically, taking 1 for 20 in her six overs. Kirstie Gordon, Grace Ballinger, Kathryn Bryce, and Groves picked up a wicket apiece, though each conceded over five runs an over.

Chasing 305 for victory, The Blaze were dealt an early blow when Georgie Boyce was run out for just 1 in the fourth over. However, Maddy Green and Kathryn Bryce stitched together a crucial partnership that turned the momentum.

Green was particularly dominant, scoring a commanding 97 off 90 balls with 12 boundaries, while Bryce supported her well with 59 off 63. The pair added 125 for the second wicket, laying the platform for a successful chase.

Despite losing quick wickets in the middle — including Sarah Bryce for 8 and Ella Claridge for 1 — The Blaze found a steady hand in Georgia Elwiss, who delivered under pressure with an unbeaten 75 off 68 balls, featuring eight boundaries. She was well-supported by skipper Kirstie Gordon, who remained not out on 25 and helped guide the team home in the final over.

Somerset’s bowling effort was spirited but could not stem the flow of runs. Olivia Barnes was the most successful, claiming 2 for 49 in her nine overs, while Ellie Anderson and Amanda-Jade Wellington picked up one wicket each.

Alex Griffiths was the most economical with 1 for 44 in nine overs. However, the 23 wides bowled by Somerset proved costly in a high-scoring encounter where fine margins mattered.

In the end, The Blaze reached the target of 305 in 49 overs, finishing on 305 for 6 and securing four crucial points from the fixture. The match showcased high-quality batting from both sides and underlined The Blaze’s depth and resilience in chasing a big total under pressure.
