Day 2 of the Metro Women’s One Day Cup 2025 saw dominant performances as The Blaze, Warwickshire, Hampshire, and Lancashire secured convincing wins.
The Blaze chased down Durham to claim a 5-wicket victory, while Warwickshire powered past Essex with a commanding 108-run win. Hampshire overcame Surrey by 50 runs, and Lancashire wrapped up the day with a clinical 7-wicket triumph over Somerset, further cementing their strong starts to the competition.
Match 5: Durham vs The Blaze– The Blaze Won By 5 Wickets
The Blaze secured a comprehensive five-wicket victory over Durham with a massive 76 balls to spare in the 5th match of the Women’s One-Day Cup at Chester-le-Street.
After winning the toss and opting to field first, Blaze’s bowlers responded superbly, restricting Durham to 200 in 47.2 overs. Hollie Armitage led the batting effort for Durham with a well-composed 81 off 90 balls, supported by Mady Villiers who scored a patient 45 from 75 deliveries.
Earlier, openers Suzie Bates and Emma Marlow had laid a steady, if cautious, platform, but regular strikes from the Blaze attack kept pegging Durham back. Sarah Glenn starred with the ball, finishing with impressive figures of 3 for 45 from her 10 overs, while Grace Ballinger and Josie Groves chipped in with two wickets each. Kathryn Bryce also delivered a miserly spell, claiming 2 for 26 from 8.2 overs.
In response, The Blaze began with positive intent as Amy Jones stroked 35 runs at a run-a-ball pace before falling to Katherine Fraser. Tammy Beaumont was steady for her 22 before becoming Phoebe Turner’s first of three victims.
Kathryn Bryce then took command of the chase, crafting a fluent 54 from 57 balls, ensuring there was little pressure despite a few quick wickets. Sarah Bryce contributed a brisk 34 before being trapped lbw by Suzie Bates, while Georgia Elwiss added a quickfire 20 to keep the momentum firmly with Blaze.
Turner’s 3 for 29 offered Durham a glimmer of hope, but Orla Prendergast (16* off 28) and Ella Claridge (10* off 19) calmly guided the visitors home to 201 for 5 in just 37.2 overs. Despite spirited efforts from Durham’s bowlers, Blaze’s batters were far too clinical, sealing a dominant win.
Match 6: Warwickshire vs Essex– Warwickshire Won By 108 Runs
Warwickshire delivered a commanding all-round performance to defeat Essex by 108 runs in the 6th match of the Women’s One-Day Cup at Chelmsford.
After being sent in to bat, Warwickshire’s innings began on a rocky note, losing five wickets for just 22 runs inside seven overs. Eva Gray wreaked havoc with the new ball, claiming the first four wickets and ending with superb figures of 5 for 62.
However, Emily Arlott staged a remarkable rescue act, compiling a magnificent 130 off 141 balls, laced with 18 fours and three sixes. She found crucial support from Chloe Brewer, who dug in for a resilient 44, and later from Charis Pavely and Issy Wong, who contributed handy runs down the order. Wong’s unbeaten 29 off just 14 balls added late momentum, and a staggering 41 extras also bolstered the total. Warwickshire eventually posted 289 in their 50 overs, recovering splendidly from their early collapse.
In reply, Essex showed early promise as skipper Grace Scrivens and Cordelia Griffith kept the chase alive with fluent half-centuries.
Scrivens made a composed 53 while Griffith top-scored with a brisk 72 that included seven fours and a six. However, once Scrivens departed to Pavely and Griffith followed soon after, Essex’s innings unraveled dramatically. Georgia Davis and Chloe Brewer applied the squeeze in the middle overs, with Davis picking up 2 for 21 and Brewer cleaning up the tail with 3 for 18.
Katie George also impressed with the ball, taking 3 for 38 including key middle-order wickets. Essex were eventually bundled out for 181 in the 39th over, falling well short of the target. Warwickshire’s strong recovery with the bat, backed by a disciplined bowling effort, earned them a comprehensive win and five points from the contest.
Match 7: Hampshire vs Surrey– Hampshire Won By 50 Runs
Hampshire secured a convincing 50-run win over Surrey in their Women’s One-Day Cup clash at The Rose Bowl in Southampton.
After winning the toss and choosing to bat first, Hampshire built a strong platform through the efforts of openers Ella McCaughan and Maia Bouchier. The pair stitched together a 116-run stand, with McCaughan scoring a patient 64 off 100 balls, hitting seven fours and a six, while Bouchier played fluently for her 61 off 69 balls.
Despite quick strikes that saw Charli Knott, Georgia Adams, and Rhianna Southby fall within a span of 61 runs, Hampshire continued to keep the scoreboard moving thanks to handy contributions from the middle order.
Abi Norgrove’s 26 off 32 and a brisk 14 from Nancy Harman lifted the total further, as Hampshire posted a competitive 259 for 8 from their 50 overs. Surrey’s bowling was led by Alice Capsey, who claimed two wickets for just 22 runs in her six overs, supported by Kalea Moore’s two wickets, though the attack generally struggled to contain the extras, conceding 28 in total including 20 wides.
In response, Surrey stumbled early in their chase, losing Bryony Smith and Danni Wyatt-Hodge with just 18 on the board, and Sophia Dunkley soon after, leaving them 23 for 3.
Alice Capsey attempted to anchor the innings with a measured 57 from 96 balls, while Alice Monaghan provided some impetus with a lively 40 from 42 deliveries. However, regular wickets kept pegging Surrey back, and once Capsey fell at 173 for 8, the game tilted decisively in Hampshire’s favour.
Kalea Moore’s unbeaten 19 added some late resistance, but Surrey were eventually bowled out for 209 in 43.2 overs. Linsey Smith was the standout with the ball for Hampshire, taking 3 for 28 from her 10 overs, well supported by Lauren Bell and Freya Davies, who claimed two wickets apiece. Rebecca Tyson also chipped in with a wicket, ensuring that Hampshire pocketed four points from the encounter while Surrey went away empty-handed.
Match 8: Somerset vs Lancashire– Lancashire Won By 7 Wickets
Lancashire cruised to a commanding seven-wicket win over Somerset in the 8th match of the Women’s One-Day Cup at Taunton.
After winning the toss and electing to field, Lancashire’s bowlers dominated proceedings, restricting Somerset to 205 for 9 in their 50 overs. Kate Cross and Hannah Jones led the attack brilliantly, both picking up two wickets each while maintaining miserly economies of 2.70 and 2.30 respectively.
Emma Lamb also chipped in with two scalps, while Danielle Collins and Tara Norris picked up one wicket apiece. Somerset struggled for momentum throughout their innings, with opener Emma Corney top-scoring with a patient 35 off 79 balls.
Alex Griffiths provided some middle-order resistance with a brisk 46 off 58, and Amanda-Jade Wellington added a lively 26 from 20 balls, but regular wickets kept Somerset in check. Chloe Skelton’s unbeaten 24 and Laura Jackson’s 13* ensured Somerset managed to bat out their 50 overs, but a total of 205, despite some late resistance, always looked below par.
In reply, Lancashire’s chase was steered with authority by Eve Jones, who played a fluent knock of 97 from 111 balls, striking 14 fours and a six. She combined with Emma Lamb to add a 151-run opening stand that effectively sealed the match. Lamb, playing the anchor role, contributed 52 off 68 balls before falling lbw to Wellington.
Even after the dismissals of Lamb, Jones, and Katie Mack, Lancashire faced little pressure, with Seren Smale’s unbeaten 23 and Fi Morris’s unbeaten 18 guiding them home comfortably in just 36.5 overs. Somerset’s bowlers found little assistance, with Ellie Anderson, Charlie Dean, and Wellington each picking up a wicket, but leaking runs at crucial times.
Lancashire’s clinical performance with both bat and ball earned them a bonus-point victory, as they secured five points from the game while Somerset were left empty-handed.
