India speedster Jhulan Goswami has recently recalled their defeat in the 2017 World Cup final against England at the Lord’s. After reaching the final after 12 years, India lost to the hosts by nine runs. However, Goswami shared that the team failed to handle the pressure in the crunch situation.
For England, only Natalie Sciver scored 50 as they managed to score 228 in their fifty overs. Sarah Taylor and Katherine Brunt scored 45 and 34 respectively. Meanwhile, Jhulan Goswami was India’s most economical and successful bowler who finished with the figure of 10-3-23-3 while spinner Poonam Yadav picked up two wickets.
Jhulan Goswami said that the tournament was very crucial as they failed to do well in the previous two editions. However, the team lost the match due to their failure in handling the pressure in the middle overs. Despite the fifties from Punam Raut and Harmanpreet Kaur, the couldn’t reach the finish line. She also added that if they get another chance, they would rectify wherever they did wrong.
“That World Cup was very important for all of us because last couple of world cups we did not play well as a team. So definitely we wanted to do well but, unfortunately, the way we lost the match it was really heartbreaking. But if we get a similar opportunity I don’t think so that we will do the same mistake. We could not handle the pressure in the middle,” Jhulan Goswami said to Sportskeeda.
Meanwhile, the highest wicket-taker in ODIs, also admitted that after the 2017 tournament, India reached the T20 World Cup twice – 2018 and 2020. However, they failed to win a title so far.
“But at the same time the positive thing that we saw was that after the 2017 World Cup women’s cricket flourished in our country, People started to watch women’s cricket very keenly. And since 2016-17 the women’s cricket is also performing well consistently. In the last three world cups, we played two finals. The progress of women’s cricket after 2017 world cup is in the right direction and it will continue,” Jhulan Goswami concluded.
